Biopsy registry for thyriod problems

Can you advise if thyriodism is on the rise and the ratio ie 1 in 4 and when it began. In cats the escalation started in 1980's and has been put down to pop top cans as being one of the causes. Can you advise if all removed human thryriods are given biopsies and are these know cause and effects listed on a registry somewhere. So as to track down causes and help eliminate the escalation of thyriod disease.

That is a great idea to contact Ophra maybe if we all flood her with emails. Anyone know the contact as I am down here in Aussi land.  I know that she would pursue this through her doctors. I think the way to find out what is causing thyriodism is to have a national registry base with all the biopsy results on. A simple voluntary questionare with the write questions should be able to pin point this problem very quickly. This is a great tool to discovering what is causing any disease especially one on such a sharp rise all over the world. If they can get to one major cause for cats surely us humans should be able to do the same.
I am afraid along with being an avid conservationist I am very stuborn and consistant fighter when it comes to getting answers especially if someone is doing me wrong.

I had no idea Oprah was hypo, Stella! That's a great idea - flood her and make her educate the public.  She's the perfect medium to bring it to the masses!

I was told most thyroids go through post-surgery study but that's mostly for the purpose of further diagnosis and treatment.  I had to sign on the dotted line in order to allow that to be done.  So I guess a patient has some choice on what happens after removal, though I can't imagine someone refusing.

Studies I have read *suggest* that with the advent of our medical tools becoming available to more of the population (Ultrasounds, CT Scans, MRI's, FNA's, etc.) that is why we see more thyroid cancer #'s than ever before .. because it is being found in more people.  Especially true for the type of ca I have which are papillary microcarinomas .. if I never had the surgery for the orig. 2 nodules the 2 incididental findings (which they say 30% of all those who have autopsies for other reasons contain these tumors) most likely never would have been diagnosed yet I would have had them and not been a statistic.

Interesting on the pop top cans for cats.

I agree with Stella; not enough being done in the way of research.

There is way to much speculation of this disease and no concrete proof of anything yet.

It is sad - but thyroid disorders are not top on any scientific list - they do minimal reasearch and put the first thought out there. Unfortunately us thyroid patients have to do alot on our own and use the trial and error approach to feel better.

very sad. No real public awareness like breast cancer is. yet it is on the rise and no talk is going on.

Let's flood Oprah - she got hypothryoid -so she would be perfect to hound to get this out and move some dead butts to get solutions.
