Post op recovery

I had a near total thyroidectomy on 16th june 2008. There were complications in that i had a bleed an hour or so after surgery and was opened up again to get it sorted. I was in theatre for about 5 hours in total with two lots of anaesthetic.I was quite sick shortly afterwards and was told this was to be expected under the circumstances.  I was kept in hospital an extra night but was still home on the third afternoon. I have had very little pain but was severely constipated from the codiene. (Not recommended). My throat feels very restricted. A bit like someone put a tight elastic band about where the thyroid is. i have a tendancy to stoop forward but this causes tension in the back of my neck and down my shoulders which is why i guess i'm getting headaches. I try to stretch my neck back to relieve the tight feeling in my throat.
Is this all normal and how long can i expect the tightness for. I'm told i will be back at work in around 4 weeks. Does that sound about right?

Sorry you had a difficult time with the surgery. Yes, it is all normal, and it does take about 2 to 3 weeks before you will feel better, and able to move about as normal. Don't lift anything heavy for about 2 weeks. The tight feeling is all the internal stitching pulling everything in nice and tight. That feeling will fade in a few weeks.

I had a partial thyroidectomy ten days ago,I go to have my stitiches removed tomorrow. My question is: I'm coughing frequently, uncontrollably and feels like something's in the way down my throat, has anyone else experienced this? Also,I'm feeling cold off and on,and feeling tired.Information would be much appreciated.

I am so sorry you had the add'l complications.  I know of one other member who had similar complications and she is ok.

The tight feeling may be helped with a u shaped pillow behind your neck when sitting.  It takes awhile for the internal stitches to heal ... that is why you feel tight and also internal swelling I'm sure.

May I ask why you had the TT .. maybe we can help with some advice for aftercare based on your diagnosis b4 the surgery and WELCOME!!!
