I went to my gynecologist yesterday for a pregnancy test. My period is two weeks (!!) late, but I took a home test and it was negative. The test taken at the doctors was negative as well, and when I asked her other symptons, she mentioned it could be a thyroid problem. My mother has had hypothyroidism since she was very young, and when I heard this, things immediately clicked into place. I've been doing some research on the web on this disease, and my family history of thyroidism and symptoms : fatigue (I am never able to get enough sleep and feel refreshed waking up), inability to be cold (I wore a sweater indoors all summer!), dry hair thats beginning to fall out slightly, outer edges of my eyebrows no longer grow in, etc, etc.
So, I made an appointment to have the blood tests done in two days. I have always worried I would inherit this disease from my mother, but I know from experience it's best to combat it early...
My question is: What is the diagnosis process like. How long will it take to get your results back, typically. And when you do, what happens then? Are doctors usually able to put you on a prescription once blood work is received, and how often are you required to have follow-up visits?
