Help with ultrasound

US results say right lobe is larger than left right-5.3 X1.3 X 2.2cm left-3.4 X0.8 X 1.9cm.  Two nodules are seen in each lobe of the thyroid, the largest is seen on the right measuring 1cm in greatest diameter.  The isthmus is not thickened, measuring 1.6 mm in thickness.  Opinion: right lobe of thyroid larger than left, 2 nodules noted in each lobe of the thyroid, possibly representing multinodular goiter.  Blood results show T4, free - 1.5.  Thyroglobulin antibodies <20 and TSH, 3rd generation - reference range.  Can anybody tell me what is going on?????  Thanks bunches

Thanks...Apparently according to what I have seen on this site my US results are extremely vague, would getting the scan itself help?  Are there other tests to decipher thyroid functioning that should be done?  I'm assuming a nodule that is 1cm isn't much of a problem??  Same symptoms here...occassional hoarseness, tender neck, feel like I have a super tight neckline on, and coughing/swallowing difficulty.  Could the enlarged thyroid cause this...ENT says no.

Can't tell you much, are the nodules solid, cystic or fluid?  Do they have a blood supply?  Are they smooth or irregular?  All these things matter as much as the size, and in my case my hormones were all fine except for my TPO antibodies.  I had four nodules, the largest was 2.1 cm.  They were solid, vascular and smooth, three were in the right and I still have one in the left, it is 1.4 cm.  By the doctor's calculations, I had about a 5% chance of cancer, but I was having hoarseness and swallowing issues, so I had a right lobectomy to check for cancer and hopefully alleviate my symptoms.  All of the information that I read told me that my chances of having cancer were more like 15-25%.  Two weeks after surgery, I was feeling great and I thought I would keep the other half of my thyroid, then I got the news: microscopic multifocal papillary cancer.  So now the other side has to go.  I will have another surgery in a few weeks.  If it is warranted you could get an FNA biopsy, but that is not always a perfect test, in fact they could not tell on mine whether or not I had cancer, the result was benign folllicular clusters.  All I can say is be dilligent, ask for more tests, luckily cancer of the thyroid is very slow growing (usually) and it usually does not metastisize to other places, so watching and waiting is a good option most of the time.
