Help on Thyroid lump?

Hello,I am new here and I am just looking for some1 to give my some advice.Especially 1 in my position.
Ok here goes...I noticed I had a lump on my Thyroid,so I went to an after hours clinic. The Dr. knew right away what it was because it moved up and down when I swallowed. So,he sent me to a surgeon. The surgeon did an FNA on the lump and it came back negative for malignancy. But,he still wanted it out...I mean like within that week.2 reasons why I didnt...1.no insurance and 2.I wanted a 2nd opinion. So,I went to an Endo. She told me that ppl get them all the time and being how I didnt have insurance she thought it was fine,as long as it did not grow.I have had this lump since October and every once in awhile I get sharp pains in it.I was wondering if that is normal? And,if it is safe to not do anything about it?My Endo was gonna treat it with Thyroid supplement to shrink it but,she couldnt because my Thyroid level was normal.Any help would b appreciated.Thank you!

removal of half your thryoid rarely affects the functions of the remaining side.. it will work fine, as I know I current live with it!. The surgery is a breeze I too were very afraid.. but it by far was the easiest surgery to go through no pain in the incision at all just a sore throat... all that is jumping the gun a bit ....please dont be afraid.. you will be fine either way! Keep faith and stay strong and positive! it is all a piece of cake. I am so sorry to hear about your mom!, you should try and get your weight up, thats sounds so thin ! Take care email if you have any more questions

God Bless

Thank you so much for your reply. This realy scares me.Not cause of Cancer but of the surgery.I have never been put under before. My mom died of Ovarian Cancer in 2004 and I can still see her getting wheeled in the room scared she wasnt gonna come out.Plus I am 29 and only weigh 93 lbs. And,I dont want it out because I know it will mess my Thyroid all up.And,it is normal at the moment.Again thank you!

They are very common and 85% benign... I had my right thyroid removed 1 month ago I had a large 3.0 cm cold nodule which started coming back suspicious so I had it removed it came back benign.. though I have had it there for at least 2+ years since I had found it.

I still have a nodule on my left thyroid.. but the problem is that they truly will never know what it is till it omes out. There is no urgency in having your nodule removed... if it is coming back benign and not bothering you with your swallowing or breathing I would watch it.. find out exactly what type of cells are being found in it, that might help certain cells are found to be higher risk of  cancer than others.. Thyroid cancer is VERY slow growing and one of the most curable cancer to have.. so waiting either way should not have much change in your outcome.

Mine was benign on my first FNA then it changed .. I am glad to of had mine removed I now have peace of mind in knowing exactly what it was. NO need to panic or rush, my labs were always normal too. Stay on top of it with ultrasounds and FNA and watch for change.. I hope this helps. Good luck in your decision.
