Running Out of Time on Insurance

Since I will only be covered by my insurance co until 06/05, due to being laid off,  I'm scared that my endo has chosen the wrong dose for me, and need to know what to do.  She had said that Graves Disease would not be considered a pre-existing condition, but my new insurance co Blue Cross Blue Shield is telling me that it is, so I guess she was wrong....anyway, I got RAI (25 MGI or something like that) on Feb. 29, 08 - I now have a puffy face, puffy hands, achy everything and HEAVY periods and I sound like Clint Eastwood in Dirty Harry! I've been VERY depressed - I've gained 11 lbs and I've been so good about not eating! (& I may have hurt my cat as I was very careful, but he is a toilet drinker- i know it's disgusting) I went and got my blood drawn on May 23rd and she put me on Synthroid (ofcourse whatelse? right?) 200 MCGs a day for one week and after that 100 a day.  I have an appt. with her on May 30th but I guess that's really the last time I can afford to see her.  What can I do to get on Armour?  Can I just go to Mexico and get some meds for the year?  How do you self medicate?  I'm sure it's not a good idea, but what choice do I have? Use up my 401K? Also, do you really NEED to eat if you don't have a thyroid?

Wait..... I just went through this insurance crud .. Let me enlighten you on the law of insurance.

WHETHER YOU HAVE CANCER- AUTOIMMUNE DISEASES - OR A PLAIN OLD COLD   "GROUP" insurance plans HAVE TO COVER THE WORKER REGARDLESS.!!!

If you were "solely" taking out insurance on your own THEN the insurance carrier can deny you or accept - depending on the situation.

IF YOU SIGN UNDER ANOTHER COMPANY TO WORK and you want to take their group plan THEY CAN NOT DENY YOU GROUP INSURANCE BY LAW. Whether you have a pre-existing condition or not!!

Now if you have no insurance after it "runs out"  you should qualifiy for state aid per President Bush's new plan. As he quoted : No American will need to go without IF they do not have coverage from employment. There are ways to get coverage.

You need to do this --------- IF you want Armour - call that endo tomorrow - Insist on a med change today and ask for a 2 month supply to be filled. You should be at 1 and 1/2 grain  ( which is 90mg) every day given the Synthroid dosage of 100mcg. Tell  her you want this filled immediately due to insurance problems. If you get no support - call your family doctor or any physician you have dealt with to demand the new meds.

Someone should listen - even if you need to bust the door down. Plan on spending all day on this if you need to and don't hang up until you get what you want. Welcome to our medical society.

And let me add.......... skipping meals or not eating will make you as big as a house in no time as a hypoT patients. The key is very small frequent meals that are high protein and low fat- sugar and NO FLOUR. It's meats-fish-and green veggies if you want to get better quicker.

Start there --You will be OK

I'm not sure what my labs are.  we are going over them on the 30th, I just said when I got my blood drawn that if I was hypo, to please have the dr. call in a prescription as I saw no point in waiting for a week.  May 30th was her next open appt.  I know it will work out.  The ins. co. said something about a letter of credible coverage and Coventry said they would fax one over to me as soon as they got my term. papers........
Thank you, both!  and i really know you do need to eat........I just ate supper.

Take care

Check your new insurance policy or call and ask for a detailed explanation of what a Pre-existing Condition clause means for that policy.

When I got new insurance I thought it would never cover any of my thyroid issues because of the Pre-existing Condition clause.  Turns out the exclusion for my pre-existing condition lasted only six months (twelve for my spouse).  Then it did end up paying all but maybe one bill.  That's because that visit was a definite follow-up to the surgery I had had.

The whole thing was not quite as bad as what I'd had in mind.

I almost hesitate to write all this because I don't want to give you false hope.  But I do think it's worth it for you to look into it further.

Good luck.

Synthroid generic can be gotten at WalMart and Target pharmacies very inexpensive.  Also I think the website for Synthroid name brand has some kind of offer, too ??

It is the Dr. visit and/or lab work that is costly.  Maybe the Endo will work with via phone as mine did after my initial two visits .. now I only go yearly to see her and the rest she does via phone and/or labs ....

What are your labs?
