I also meant to give you this link to an article written by a doctor.  I think it would be worthwhile for you and the family to read and discuss it.

If you are going to change doctors, just be aware that good thyroid doctors are hard to find.  Not all Endos are good thyroid doctors either.  Many specialize in diabetes, not thyroid.  Many have the "Immaculate TSH Belief" that has caused so much grief for many of our members.   Many strongly resist testing for FT3 and fT4, because they don't believe it is important.  Wrong.

The best way is to get a recommendation from a member with good experience with a certain doctor.  Perhaps members can recommend one in the Chicago area.  When you think you have found one, I recommend calling the office and saying that you are looking for a good thyroid doctor, but would like to ask one of the nurses a few questions before making an appointment.  I have always found this to work.  Then I ask if the doctor is willing to treat a thyroid patient clinically, by testing and adjusting meds as necessary to relieve symptoms, without being constrained by resultant TSH levels.  The other question I ask is whether the doctor is willing to prescribe meds other than T4 types.  If the answer to either is no, then you should just keep on looking for a good thyroid doctor.

I will tell my doctor about all the testing but right now she is out of town I know my iron is low I am taking bills for that and I and she didn't give a reason why I was hypothyroid only that it could run in the family and to be honest she never told me anything about the cause or what I need to do or ever eat to keep my weight under control I really need to talk to my doctor because I find out more things that she doesn't tell me anything when I need to know I am gonna change doctors...

Please talk to your doctor and counselor about everything.  I think one of hardest things we have to do is sort out what is thyroid and what is everything else. Get your thyroid under control.  You are young and a single mother with all that goes along with that and you have a disease that can be hard to manage.  You have every reason to be overwhelmed and depressed.  Start by getting copies of your lab work and get the right blood work done.  I am sorry your parents are not more understanding but at least you recognize that you need some support.    Good luck to you.

If you are going to go ahead and ask for other tests now, then you should include Vitamin D, B12 and iron/ferritin.  Were you ever given a reason for being hypothyroid, like possibly Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, which is the most common cause?

There may be additional tests that you will need later, but most important now is to insist that the doctor test for free T3 and free T4 (not total T3 and total T4), along with TSH.  If the doctor resists or makes excuses that it rally isn't necessary, just keep insisting and don'r take no for an answer.

After you get those done, make sure to get that copy and write on there how you were feeling at the time and what your medication dosage is.  These then become very valuable as a reference for the future.  By Federal law, doctors are required to provide you a copy of the lab report upon your request.  Please get the copy and then post results and reference ranges shown on the lab report so that members can help interpret and advise further regarding your doctor, your meds, and other tests that may be advisable.

Best to you..

I never did get the lab report I will have to ask her for them so I could know know about it because I didn't know I was obligated to have one by request.

When I said about the Thyroid I meant it's hypo and the level is suppose to be at 4 percent and mine was up at 17 percent she said it was to high so that's why she had changed the pills to 150 mg they were 100 mg

I have been so depressed today I was crying I had a really bad headache I just feel so out of it I am willing to work with you guys I do not mind I know I need help and I really do not know much about this when I go back to the doctor I will ask for a copy of my lab work I go back in for blood in three weeks but I go again in two weeks for another test so I will ask for everything I wanna thank you so much for your help and advice take care..

What tests were done and what were the results of each test, along with the reference ranges stated on your lab report?  If you don't have a copy of the report, your doctor is obligated to give you one, upon request.

I know you don't feel well, but can you please explain what you mean by "my Thyroid is hypo it was up 4 more levels than where it should be it was up at 17".

Being  hypo can cause depression, so if you can work with us, we can try to help you figure out what you might need to do.  We can do that best by knowing what thyroid labs were done and what the results were, along with the reference ranges, which must come from your own report.

To really understand your thyroid status, along with TSH, you need to be tested for free T3 and free T4,  which are the biologically active thyroid hormones.  Free T3 is the most important because it largely regulates metabolism and many other body functions.  Studies have shown that FT3 also correlates best with hypo symptoms, such as those you mentioned.  Symptom relief should be all important.  You need to make sure your doctor is willing to treat your symptoms by adjusting FT3 and FT4 with medication, as necessary to relieve symptoms.  Many of our members report that symptom relief for them required that FT3 was adjusted into the upper part of its range and FT4 adjusted to at least midpoint of its range.  If your doctor is not willing to treat you for symptoms in this manner then you will need to find one that will do so.

I totally agree with Stella that any type of thyroid disease is horrible.

What is your actual disorder?  Do  you have recent lab reports from which you could post the results and reference ranges?  Without knowing your specific condition and your thyroid hormone levels, we can't answer your question.

This disease is horrible and we all can relate to this post on how it beats on us.

I don't know your actual condition whether hyper or hypo.
