Some help on chronic hives/hashimotos

There is a definite link between hives and hashimotos. I had chronic, debilitating hives for 6 months. I went to 6 different doctors who put me on everything from doxepine, zyrtec, benadryl, you name it. Finally a specialist tested my antibodies. I always had a normal thyroid panel, so the doctors never tested my antibodies. I had elevated antibodies and was diagnosed with hashimotos. They put me on levoxyl eight years ago and I have not seen a hive since. My sister had the exact problem...normal TSH, chronic hives. She told doctors to test antibodies which they did not feel was necessary due to her normal thyroid panel...hashimotos. She went on levoxyl, had to increase it twice. She has not seen a hive in 5 years. Now my son has the same problem. We are testing him tomorrow. It's amazing how many doctors are not aware of the link between hashimotos and hives...and you can still have elevated antibodies with a normal thyroid panel.

This discussion is related to Is there a link between Hashimoto and Chronic Urticaria????.

I have Graves and had chronic hives for the last 6 weeks.
But they have found mine due to stress and cold extremities as we are getting 3 degrees celcius temperatures here early morning in Australia.

I have a suspicion that the Graves antibodies may be causing it.
Stress makes the antibodies flare up so maybe thats it.
But I have had them that bad that I now have an epipen as I went into anaphalctic shock.
All allergies have been ruled out.

I have also been hypo in the past and never had them once...although I do know thyroid issues CAN contribute to the hives (Uticaria).

I have posted a few pics on my profile so you can see them at their worst.

"can still have elevated antibodies with a normal thyroid pane"

- Yes. The antibodies are there but just have not begun to do there destructive work to the thyroid yet. Then again maybe they have. Normal range is very broad. Who is to say your levels were not a little different in the past before antibodies developed? If your free T3 and T4 are on the low end of the range, some Drs will say thats normal.
