You are the only person I've met (here or anywhere) who's also allergic to soy. Are you also allergic to soy topically? That is where my symptoms were first noticable. Although, I think I have been allergic since childhood without knowing it.
Sandy
Hey all,
I am severely allergic to soy. I guess my Mother gave it to me as I was a colic baby and they thought milk was bothering me. I guess soy even bothered me then. My hypothyroidism came on literally right after getting terribly ill in Europe in 1995 (Prague, before it became a tourist destination-no english on the menu) and I ate soy filled ravioli thinking it was cheese and ended up in the ER.
If I eat it, I could have an anaphalaxtic (sp?) shock in my intestines and someday it could end up killing me. I avoid even processed foods with it in it.
I don't recommend soy for ANYONE though, allergic or not, ESPECIALLY with a thyroid disorder. Just google soy side effects and do a little bit of research and see what conclusions you come to, but I would avoid at all costs.
Also, stay away from almonds, broccoli and google foods that are goitergenics (sp again?). I avoid all the foods that can effect my thyroid gland.
Also, always wait 4 hours before taking any supplements after you take your meds.
The answer to your question is...you never really know. Food has to be labeled, so I read a lot in the grocery store. Eating out is a pain. Worse are hair products, makeup, vitamins and some meds.
Thanks for asking; most of my family doesn't.
Sandy
Hi. I'm really new to thyroid meds (almost a month) so I'm just learning the in's and outs here. I was under the understanding that you could not have soy.
I was drinking soy milk and using it in cereal instead of regular cow milk because I thought it might be healthier for your heart.
For 2 years I was having issues with ? thrush. My throat would become very red and bldy w/ white film on inside in the far back (sorry it sounds gross), and my throat would be very swollen on the outside every couple of months. I just stopped drinking it a couple of weeks ago. After reading the explaination by "Sc00ter1808" now I'm not sure. To be on the safe side though I guess I'll have to just drink my 2% untill I get retested.
As for the question by "dai3symae", I had an allergy test done not to long ago and I'm not allergic to anything.
Geez......... what a bad situation.
and so much of our food has hidden soy porducts in it.
How will you know you are really soy free?
Sorry about it being such a problem 4 U
Thanks for answering my question. I break out in hives, itch and have other really unpleasant (and unmentionable in nice company!!!) symptoms if I eat food with soy or use products with soy in it. Lately I get hives in my mouth if I eat soy so I carry an epi-pen every where I go. I haven't had to use it yet and I hope I never have to.

Thank you for the info. I will give it a try.And next time I see my endo will ask him...better put that on my list. now.
yes and no. I guess it all depends on how your body adapts to it when you take the synthetic form. I do not have any problems with absorption what so ever. Some one else may. The human body is a screwy thing to understand. Too complicated for me! :)
I look at it this way, I wait until an hour after I take my meds and use soy for cereal or oats and the way my TSH drops after I get used to it I know my body does not have any problems. I guess it all depends on you! While your taking your meds and for 6 weeks try using soy and if your TSH goes either way you have your answer. For some reason the endos use 6 weeks as some baseline for when you go on a new dose so this could be the same. Talk with your doc about soy and your meds first though!
Good Luck,
Cheers,
Scott
For years I drank soy milk instead of cow milk. and really enjoyed it. After TT last year for Pap cancer, I understood that soy would interfere with synthroid absorption. Is this not so????
WELCOME back to the community Scott~
SO GREAT TO SEE YOU!!!!!
C~
Nope, I can only use soy due to that darn ole lactos garbage. I dont have a thyroid anymore due to TT for PapCa in Jan 07. I was told it might be bad to drink or use when I take my meds in the morning but my body must have adjusted because I use it all the time after an hour I take my meds. Believe me I have no problems as my TSH is still not normal yet even after a year on this stuff. It keeps going down and down then the doc changes my meds rises for a little while and then back down it goes. :)
Cheers,
Scott
I react very badly to soy.....makes my body feel like its dying.
Don't think so, but I am trying to avoid it.
