papillary carcinoma and pregnancy

I was diagnosed to have had papilliary carcinoma last aug-oct of 2000. then i had it removed immediately (both thyroids). Then, now, i take thyrax 150 mg everyday.
In 2001 or 2002, i had iodine scan, and everything was already clear. Until now, year 2007, everything had been fine. I had checkup of TSH and result is ok.
Recently, we are planning to get married with my bf, and his mom is very strongly against it. Because of my health.

My question is am I suited to get married and have baby?
What are the effects of this to the baby if ever I get pregnant?
Should thyrax be stopped during pregnancy?

I am 28 yrs old, 5'6", 53 kgs., taking thyrax 150 mg everyday.

Pls. advice. Thank you.

I am sorry you are having this kind of issue.

Have you ever seen Catherine Bell from JAG?  She was diagnosed with Thyroid cancer as well when she was 21.  She has a beautiful baby too.  She is living a very health life.

Look at all the wonderful people on this site and they will tell you they are living their life as well.  I am a male 38 just recently removed thyroid due to PapCanc as well just finished my RadioIodine and had a clear scan this past week.  I see no reason if I wanted to have more kids why this would limit me.  I refuse to let this drag me down and I hope this does not for you either!  My wife listened to me about everything that I learned from all the wonderful folks on this site as there is a wealth of knowledge and experience on here!  All these wonderful people are la second family to me now! :)

Its just about being educated and I hope that your future husband will sit down with you and show him about thyroid cancer and how you can live a health life and that the hormone pill you take is just that HORMONE!! non-medication!

I would recommend taking supplements(multi vitamin/mineral) as well to keep your antioxidents strong!  I am a firm believer (I take lifepak from Pharmanex/nuskin) that antioxidents are the key to a healthy life and that these destroy the free radicals in your body that cause sickiness!!
(www.mascoty.mypharmanexusa.com)  I truly believe this helped me beat this cancer!!

Cheers,
Scott

Bright Star is what I am going to call you, and that is your new Indian name, okay...because that is what you are!!!!  and don't let any future monster-in-law make you feel different!!!!!!!

So, Bright star, if he is the man of your dreams AND if he loves and adores you the way you are...if he understands the words, love, honor & respect, in sickness and in health...then marry him!!!!!  Otherwise don't!!!!  You deserve only the best, especially since things have already been rough for you!!!  Accept nothing less!!!!!!!

Now then, you might want to tell that mother of his, that even people who haven't had health issues, can't have babies.  There are a million different reasons for the things that happen.  A cousin of mine just lost their baby at 5  months, because something about her uterus being to weak to carry the weight of the baby.  The babies health was fine, she wsa fine, and nobody knew she wouldn't be able to carry a baby full term.  My Aunt married two men, both named Jim, both were sterile, but didn't find out until they were married.  But sometimes the universe/God whatever you want to call it, protects us too.  That is where faith in a higher power comes in.  If you can't have kids biologically, then I would say you are being protected, or maybe there are a couple of kids/souls waiting to be adopted by a loving couple (you & your husband), you are young, so you could use your eggs and do the whole surrogate mother route, but who is to say you couldn't on your own biologically anyhow.  Your maybe mother-in-law is not God, nor an angel obviously, and don't let her get to you.

As far as medically, that is something your ob/gyn or endo would have the answers for.  But if they say you can't, remember they too are not Gods!  They see many unexplained miracles everyday!!!  Go with what is in your heart, and if you and your someday husband want to have kids, you will have them!!!

Oh, and I think I am reading your post right, in that, she isn't really worried about you, she is more worried about having an heir to her throne...right?  If that is teh case, I would be more worried about the effect of having her as a grandmother would have on the baby, than your health....AND if I have read your post wrong, sorry...I have monster-in-law myself, so I tend to go teh negative way first.  Artsyrose must like her MOL!!!  ;0)

take care & I wish you the best of luck on what sounds like a very happy and exciting near future!!!!!!!!

My family has a huge history of papillary carcinoma (me and three of my sisters).  My youngest sister was 24 when diagnosed with Stage II papillary carcinoma.  She had a TT and has been through three doses of RAI (last one 175McI).  Six months after her final RAI she and her husband finally conceived their first baby.  She was on thyroid replacement the entire time (very important when pregnant) and I'm so proud to say that their beautiful, perfect little girl just turned 1 year old last week.

You'll be fine.  Don't let the MIL get to you!

I see no reason why you should not marry and have children. Thyroid cancer is very treatable, as you have seen. Your future husband and his mother should not worry that you would be endangering yourself by becoming pregnant, nor that you might not be able to raise your children. As long as you take your medication, and are monitored you should be able to maintain good health.
