Hi there,
I am a 24 year old woman in good general health, 5'7" and 130 pounds.
During a routine physical last fall, I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism with TSH levels at 9.0. I was put on 25 mcg of levothyroxine, and follow-up bloodwork showed my TSH had dropped, but only to 8.0. My doctor then upped my dosage to 37.5, and my most recent bloodwork showed that my TSH has now increased to 10.
I have been taking my medicine diligently (every morning, and I don't eat for an hour afterwards). I really do not have many of the typical symptoms associated with hypothyroidism, besides mild fatigue, reduced appetite, and a swollen thyroid gland. I have lost between 5 and 10 pounds since my first diagnosis last fall without any efforts to lose weight.
Where do I proceed from here? My doctor seemed very surprised by the increase in TSH, and has switched my medicine from generic levothyroxine to Synthroid to see if my body will respond. She also has suggested an ultrasound if my thyroid gland stays swollen. Why wouldn't my body be responding to the medicine? Would you suggest seeing an endocrinologist at this point?
