Synthroid Question

Us there any flavoring that can be added to Synthroid to make it more palatable without destroying effectiveness. Apple sauce is often recommended, but the literature suggests this binds with the medication and one recives an uneven doseage.

Back to the issue of Synthroid taste.
I find it to be sweet if I have trouble swallowing it and it starts to dissolve.
If you must take it with a food or drink to mask the taste, as long as you take it the same way, with the same food/drink each time, you will be ok.
Consistancy is the key and the lab results will reflect that. Some med may be absorbed, but labs will show whether a higher dose is needed to to that.

This might be a clue:

Excuse me for not labeling my second post.

Also, I'm 29 and have had thyroid disease--I say this because I believe it is an autoimmune spectrum disease...educated opinion you can disagree with...

I have had thyroid problems for 10 years....two regularly monitored.

You aren't the only one who has had a long struggle--or "experience" as you put it.

I had a thryoid storm condition--do you see me bragging about it????

Don't think so.

I had to basically beat myself to talk about the psychosis I experienced when it happened.  That one experience is why I want to rule out Hash. Encephalopathy.

So--you aren't the only one with experiences.

If you don't think psychosis can be caused by thyroid storm:

I became hypo after that happened.

She is on Synthroid and nothing related to PIG.

That should not be involved on your discussion if you truely want to help this individual. Yes your are correct on absorption and different drinks - but if the individual is is having trouble a little something else may "help " her. Again if you want to agrue the fact -  Maybe with your years of your one sided opinion you may need to seek a PhD.

This discussion is over for me. If you want to continue your one sided behavior you will be in a one sided conversation.

There is some binding, but that can happen with just about any type of food.  I am guessing caregiver is trying to give this medicine to someone in her care--someone with difficulty swallowing.

I would try whatever food or drink this person can handle and just make sure this person has his or her blood tested to make sure things are running smoothly.

Grave's Lady, I think what Stella is trying to say is that you tend to barrage people who are looking for a simple answer to a simple question.

If you don't like the way barrage sounds:

barrage - the rapid and continuous delivery of linguistic communication (spoken or written)  http://www.thefreedictionary.com/barrage

BTW, maybe you should refrain from diagnosing people and telling them they need mood stabilizers and antidepressants.

Levoxyl doesn't have a taste either!  Which is not the generic substitution of Synthroid.  They both are equivalent to each other, just different manufactures.  Some wearied taste buds.

And excuse me! What's your problem? if a poster is referring to me,  I now take Levoxyl and have most of my 12 years with the exception a few months on synthroid.  Not that I need to explain it.

And if you go by that said poster and take it with juice/tomato juice, milk (calcium), etc., per his/hers suggestion, you will find  possible absorption problems.  This is a well known fact, every experienced thyroid patients know this. The poster has not done her/his home work and speaks from the side of ITs mouth.

This posters, post, has a lot to do with PIG!  Pig thyroid which is a gland which is different than eating ham.  Ham does not secrete thyroid hormone. Plus I was referring to PIG as medicine not food!

I don't know what the problem is with the said poster, maybe S/he forgot to takes meds. today or needs an adjustment in stead of trying to put words into someone's mouth or insulting other poster. Better yet, needs antidepressants!

If a person needs a PIG thyroid/Ham for mood stabilizer, has some emotional issues, especially when preferring it to chocolate as a mood stabilizer.

Gees! some people have their nerve.

Water works for me.

It's possible the poster is trying to give the Synthroid to an infant. In that case, smashing it up and mixing it into something may be required.

Otherwise, water is what is recommended.

The one thing I've noticed is if I don't swallow the Synthroid right away, it starts to dissolve. Tastes a little sweet.

I usually take all my pills with food, because I have trouble swallowing pills. My Synthroid is the one pill I swallow with water. It doesn't always go down, so I drink more water.

You wouldn't think that little pill would have trouble getting past my big mouth, but it does. :)

You have very sensitive taste buds most of us hear I don't think have that problem I on the other hand have very little taste left at all.

Try all sort of things - Hot chocolate - tea and honey  / ice tea  / Kool aid - coffee. anything. I have even taken my new med with a yorgurt drink.

Sometimes just getting them down is a chore b/c you know you have to do it every morning.

What do you like to drink the most.

I know am prescribed Synthroid ((which is NOT the generic)) & I find it tastes like sugar, no bad taste at all. I have also had the pharmacy accidently prescribed me levoxyl ((the generic substitution)) & I found it tastes horrible.

I am not sure how a "now" hypothyroid patient has a sentence in a post of "When I took it, I didn't notice any taste. " Post RAI  Hyper thyroid/ Graves patients remain on Thyroid replacement therapy usually for life.

The way I may be reading the tread tells me you may not need your replacement therapy any longer. Did it grow back and how? I am sure I am not reading this sentence correctly.

Again the posters comment has nothing to do with PIG so keep that out - or maybe try some - it has been found that it does help as a mood stabilizer. Eating ham at Easter always makes people happy and the taste is pretty good too.

Again going back to your comment. Try something you enjoy if the taste bothers you. Wash it down with any juices. - something potent - I like tomatoe and it helps me get it down when I was on it and now on my other med. I have even used a milk shake when needs. I would not recommend liquor if that was a thought. and there is the favorite morning drink -- coffee. It's tough - but good luck.

When I took it, I didn't notice any taste.

Taking it sublingual might have a taste.

I remember other patients complaing about bad taste from thyroid medication, but can't remember which ones, T-3 supplements, Armour, or some ATDs.  I would tend to think the ones with PIG.

No fruits or fruit juices.  Nothing with V-C or calcium or Fiber.

Take Calcium or Iron supplements and their food/drinks, and soy products four to 12 hours of your synthroid for they interfere with aborsption, as well as  the same with  Aspirin and equivalent.  Aspirin and other salicylate drugs (Pain killers) may increase the effectiveness of your thyroid hormone replacement by releasing more drug into the blood from body storage sites.

As an added after thought, Thyroid medication can be stimulating, so it is best to take it early on in the AM.  This might be the reason why some of us have sleep problems, especially those who take meds in the PM.

Probably more than you wanted to know - sorry!

I just swallow my synthroid and do not get an unpleasant taste.  Are you talking about taking it sub lingually ?  It seems to me there should be no taste at all if just swallowed.

Perhaps a compounding pharmacy can make it up in liquid form for you . It costs more and only lasts 30days usually bcz no preservatives, but may be helpful as they make it from scratch from a "recipe" and you pick the flavor but get a quote first $$$$
