1/2 of 25mcg will probably not affect you in any way that you notice soon, if at all. It is a very small dose.
To be honest, I can't imagine why a doctor would start you on such a dose.
I know ... I'm a bit scared to start taking it even though it is a small dose.
I have a slightly enlarged thyroid (both sides) and a nodule just a little under the biopsy size. He's thinking maybe it will shrink with the Synthroid. All blood tests have been normal. I have to have it rechecked in 6 months.
I've been thinking of just not taking it and just see if there's any change in the 6 months. I just know I don't feel good and I was thinking maybe it'd make me feel even a little better.
Thank you!
Taking the Synthroid may help shrink the nodule. The reason I commented is because 25mcg is considered a starter dose, barely theraputic.
Do as your doctor advised, only push to have your blood checked in three months just to be sure the medication isn't pushing your hormone levels too high. It probably won't, but better safe than sorry.
Take the medicine.
It might even make you feel better.
I have read many studies that synthroid therapy does not shrink nodules....that dose should not pose any side effects for most people as that is considered a pediatric dose.
I am very sensitive to meds and have some side effects on 50mcg just small ones like elevated hr, anxiety.. just be sure to have your tsh tested regulary every 6weeks or so to make sure you are staying fine. good luck
Levothyroxine therapy will shrink nodules in some cases. People are sometimes put on thyroid meds ONLY to shrink nodules, and have success.
Take the medicine!
People on this board HAVE had success with that therapy.
I guess I will give it a try. I am supposed to have my bloodwork tested again in 6 weeks after taking it.
I am a little worried about hair loss...I think I've read it can cause hair loss. Vain, I know, but I hope that doesn't happen!! ;)
Are there any readers that has had a nodule shrink?
Or has anyone had normal blood work but an enlarged thyroid and taken synthroid for that with good results?
no we have a family history of thyroid nodules and goiters and I am hypo with a partial thyroidectomy, I have 2 nodules on my remaining left thyroid. My mother was put on meds to shrink nodules but had no luck.
mine have not shrunk at all on synthroid though I take it for hypothyroidism. I had shed little hair being hypo but not to bad. I wish you luck that it will work for you.. can I ask why they are trying to shrink it? is it really large or bothersome.?
Well, it has been bothersome. January will be the 6 month 'waiting' for another ultrasound to see if it (nodule) has grown. And if it's up to the 1 cm (i think that's the size) then it will need biopsy.
I have feeling it's grown or the thyroid is more enlarged. It feels like my neck is swollen all the time and like someone is sticking their thumb in my neck all the time. Anyone else feel like that? It's awful!
