A goiter is a swollen thyroid gland. It's a good idea to get tested for antibodies to see if you have an autoimmune disease causing the goiter (swelling of the thyroid). Very often the nodules don't cause an issue; however, if your thyroid is swelling and you have symptoms, most likely, it will only get worse as time goes on.
I would agree with your doctor about the possibility of starting on med, but I also agree with Deb, that 125 mcg is a very large dose to begin with. It's generally best to start with a small dose and work your way up gradually, testing about 4-6 weeks after each increase; that will help insure that you don't end up with med induced hyper.
Starting on med early could keep you from ending up the way some of the rest of us have - very miserable and ill. I hope your doctor (pcp) will go ahead and treat you, in spite of the endo's opinion -- I agree that one (endo) needs to be kicked to the curb.
Thank you for the info!
I havent started the synthroid yet.. still waiting to talk to my doctor (pcp) about the dose.
Originally, on the phone the other night- I thought he said 125mg., but when I researched that- I see that is a high dose to start with. He (pcp) will be back in the office next week and we will discuss it then. My pcp was hoping that the endo would concur with his idea of me going on the meds, but since my endo said no- perhaps my pcp will want a 2nd opinion before starting me on the meds.I was definately NOT feeling my endo, even at the initial visit- I dont even think he checked all of the results that I brought with me, nor looked at my list of symptoms. He declared that I do not have a thyroid problem and all I should do was the FNA of the nodule to r/o cancer. Then he refused to discuss the results over the phone with me because he wanted me back in his office to bill for another visit! Annoying. After I persisted, he had his office call me back to say 'no meds, do nothing-follow-up in 6 months'. Needless to say, I will not go back to him.
I am lucky, because this was caught very early and the goiter is still very small- I would like to keep it that way!
the dose of 125mcg daily is a very high dose of T4 med to start with.
Usually 25mcg or 50mcg is the starting dose.
Be careful if you do start a 125mcg dose as you may end up drug induced hyper.
Persoanlly a lower dose would be enough to make you feel somewhat better,,,,maybe 25mcg or 50mcg and be tested every 4 weeks on yr levels.
