TO OUR AUSSIE'S

I have read and watched alot about the fires in Australia. The news keeps us up to date in the states, but I am sure we know very little on the disasters that are going on.

Stay safe down under and keep us posted on what is happening to you and your community. What started the fires?

Your in my thoughts. Stay safe

Thankyou Everyone......
RavingMad just about summed it all up.
Its a 'wait' process for many and it is very draining emotionally.
As for me and Red, we are both ok at present although Red is closer to it than me.
The fires are still burning and a lot are not contained yet.
I pray the weather isnt in the 30's (as they said) for the weekend as the winds are fuelling the fires too.
I think anyone who could deliberatley light a fire and watch it burn and kill people is seriously sick.
How can someone get a thrill from that?
Sorry but my attitude is to throw them in a fire as they have done to the people who have lost their lives  :(

A horrible comment to make but my feelings about the arsonists.
I saw a newspaper clipping today about the youngest victim and I sobbed.
It was a baby.

We will keep you informed as to how its all going and thankyou so much for your concern and prayers and well wishes.

As a fellow Aussie - I am just numb & still can't fully comprehend the destruction & carnage caused by the horrific Victorian bush fires. So many people & animals killed, people still missing, families ripped apart - homes, properties, businesses, cars & belongings incinerated. Entire towns have been reduced to rubble & ash. Since Saturday, each time I watch the news footage - I'm in tears. I think at one point, Victoria had about 30 fires burning, many 100s of kms wide & uncontainable. New South Wales has had various big fires also, one being on the Coast where I live, but thankfully no one was injured or killed, though it did threaten some properties.

Redheadaussie & smilerdeb, I'm so glad you guys are safe - you've been in my thoughts & prayers all week. I know Healesville was under attack & evacuated, I was getting worried when I hadn't heard from you Red. I pray your properties & loved ones are safe. I know the fire threats aren't over yet & that theres' still many fires burning - new & old ones flaring up all over Victoria, so please keep in contact to let us know you're both ok.

Fingers crossed the arsonists are caught - every single one of them. I agree with some of the fire victims I heard interviewed & I personally believe that a jail sentence is too good for them. Maybe they should recover the charred bodies & explain to the grieving families why they lit the fires. Why should they live in comfort - in jails equipped with gyms, computers, all the mod cons, 3 square meals a day & a warm bed at night at the tax payers expense - sheilded from what carnage they've caused, when 5000+ traumatised, homeless fire victims are surviving in army tents on football fields & relief centres relying on donations & handouts, unsure about their future & grieving for family, friends & neighbours.

On a happier note, the generosity of this nation has been unreal. Aussies have already donated over $50 million already. Theres a rock concert currently being organised & a TV telethon is going on air over the next few nights to raise more money. Ordinary Aussies have sent 100s of truckloads of clothes, blankets, food items, petfood, toiletries, furniture, toys etc, so much so - that the people at the relief centres can't distribute it all quick enough. The Australian cricket team has visited the victims to show support & help put a smile back on the kids faces. Nationwide, Coles shopping centres are donating dollar for dollar - matching what consumers spend on their grocery shopping tomorrow (friday). Donations & offers of help has also flooded in from all over the world.

I take my hat off to the brave, heroic fire victims, the fire fighters, the ambo's/paramedics, the police officers, the Army personnel, the recovery teams, the hospital staff, the Australian Red Cross & all those behind the scenes - all doing remarkable jobs - in the aftermath of what's been described as 'hell on earth'.

I'm praying for all those affected - may God watch over them, protect them & give them the love, strength, courage & hope they need to help heal the emotional pain, the physical injuries & to rebuild their shattered lives.

Hi Guys...I am safe! As smilerdeb said I had to evacuate my house. the fires are mainly in the north east of the state with some south, and north, but the biggest ones are in the North East of Victoria.
Yes some were deliberatlely lit, and the Prime Minister of Australia Kevin Rudd, is calling it Mass Murder. Many were sparked by lightning strokes. They did catch one guy who now will be charged with murder. (the parliament just passed an act to do this)
At last count there were over 200 dead. and many many many suffering horrendous burns for which some will not live through the night. The amount of displaced persons is uncountable.
here is a cut and paste of the site I am watching for news about my home... I cannot give you the link as it is so overworked it keeps crashing and it is now uusing the ISP of people to block if you do not live in that area to see the info...

Alert Message - Maroondah/Yarra Complex Fire - 9.30am

Alert Message - Communities in Healesville, Chum Creek, Badger Creek, Steels Creek, Dixons Creek, Yarra Glen, Toolangi and Castello
11/02/2009

Incident Information

Fires continue to burn in the Maroondah/Yarra Complex in particular, south east and north of Toolangi and east and north of Healesville.  Residents are advised that fire activity in these areas remains high and need to be vigilant and aware of the localised change in conditions.

Increased fire activity has also been detected in the vicinity of Mount St Leonards.

Communities in Healesville, Chum Creek, Badger Creek, Steels Creek, Dixons Creek, Yarra Glen, Toolangi and Castello are advised to remain alert to fire activity.

Multiple emergency services, including CFA, DSE, DPI, Parks Victoria, Tasmania Fire Services,  Melbourne Water, Victoria Police and the Shire of Yarra Ranges, are continuing to focus on the protection of key community infrastructure, townships and water catchment areas.

Crews will work today on strengthening strategic control lines and subject to appropriate weather conditions, will burn out areas of unburnt fuels between control lines.  Areas likely to experience increased smoke from these burns include Toolangi and communities in the vicinity of Mt Riddell.

Residents can expect to see continued and increased fire activity that is monitored and will be responded to accordingly by fire crews.  Residents are advised to be aware of emergency vehicles and requested to keep a safe distance from emergency operations.

Core Advice

    * People in the area need to remain alert as there may not be a warning should conditions change unexpectedly. Continue to listen to ABC or local radio for updates on this fire.
    * Be prepared to activate your bushfire survival plan if necessary.
    * Decide now if you are going to stay or go. Remember that it is very dangerous to leave late with a fire in the area. Road use in the area will be extremely hazardous due to low visibility from smoke. Watch out for fallen trees, power lines, abandoned cars, wildlife and emergency services vehicles.
    * If you plan to stay, remember to seek shelter from radiant heat. Should the fire reach your property, close all doors and windows and stay inside the house while the fire passes. Remain alert, extinguish any small fires and if necessary, move outside to burnt ground once the fire has passed.
    * Drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration.

Additional Information

    * Tourists are advised to avoid the following areas: Healesville, Chum Creek, Badger Creek, Steels Creek, Dixons Creek, Yarra Glen, Coldstream, Toolangi, Castello and Mount St Leonards.
    * Road closures currently in place: Information on updated road closures is available on the VicRoads website www.vicroads.vic.gov.au
    * Emergency relief centres are located at: Healesville Memorial Hall, Maroondah Highway Healesville
    * Community meetings are being held at:
    * Resources committed to this fire are: 130 fire trucks 300 personnel supported by 6 aircraft and dozers.
    * Other information: The Shire of Yarra Ranges had advised Healesville Memorial Hall is not a donation collection centre, for further details please visit http://www.yarraranges.vic.gov.au/

I am ok at present...about an hour away from the fires that are still continuing. We are all expecting the worst at the weekend (early next week) due to high temperatures again. A lot of fires are believed to have been deliberately lit and they are close to catching the firebugs but its no consolation for those who have lost friends, homes and loved ones (the count is now 181 people dead with expected number to be over 300 and with over 750 homes lost at the last count.)
RedHeadAussie has had to evacuate and doesnt know if her home is still there :(
Healesville is now burning (where she was) but she is safe at present, just as I am.
With us having a 20 year drought and the water restrictions we have had in place, there is just no way on this earth that the firefighters can control the fires.
The feeling of sadness is running through every Australians Heart at present.
Personally I lost a friend, her husband and their 2 children (ages 8 and 9) at Kinglake last weekend. And my son-in-law has lost his Grandparents too.
My heart and Prayers go out to all the People who have lost everything, including their loved ones.
But through it all we are all ...Aussie Battlers ......and through the sadness and despair, we will get through it.All us Aussies stick together in times of need and these are the worst fires we have ever had in History.
This is by no means anywhere near 'over' yet.
Thankyou for your prayers, messages etc and we will try and keep you all posted.
