TSH LEVELS

It has been all most 2 years sence my Thyroid surgery (all removed), I don't understand my doctor can't seem to get my levels right every month they have to change my med. Is this normal? Some times when I go I have bottom out then the next time it is to high, and like I said this has been 2 years.I don't understand I have gained 30 lbs,and it is so depressing, sometime I just want to stop taking my med. and see if the weight will come off. Please help me understand. Thanks Joyce1958

TSH is a pituitary hormone. FreeT3 and FreeT4 are direct measurements of thyroid hormone. Your doctor should be treating those frees. Are you taking a T4 hormone like Levo? Are you taking any T3 hormones?

This website lists endos recommended by their patients. Make sure the doctor tests and treats BOTH sets of frees and will not be afraid to give you a T3 drug if needed.

You should also have an adrenal test to make sure the adrenal glands haven't suffered through all of this. Adrenal fatigue and thyroid problems commonly go together. The 24 hour saliva is the only reliable test. The blood cortisol and 24 hour urine DO NOT show the full picture.

I recived a call from thr doctor's office today when I was there on 7/7 they did another blood test and this time my T4 is 0.90 free (all have been free),and my Tsh is 30.88 so here we go again down to 100 for a week and a half and now back up to 125mcg again. Thanks for your help.

What is the reference range for the T4 and is that Free or Total?  If your lab report doesn't say Free, then it's total, which is obsolete and of limited value.

Synthroid is a brand name of levothyroxine (levo).  What dosage are you currently on?

I don't know why your doctor doesn't understand what's going on..........you are hypo as heck!!

Although TSH is not a good indicator, it's obvious that someone with that high a TSH is hypo, especially coupled with the T4 (hoping that's Free) at 0.55, which is below most of the ranges I've seen.

AND apparently, he's not testing Free T3, which is the most important of the thyroid hormones, because that's the one the body actually uses.  The T4 is a "storage hormone" and must be converted to T3 before the body can use it.  With your T4 low, there's nothing to convert!!

Sounds like the wises thing he did was raise your synthroid, but was not too smart to go all the way from 50 to 125 mcg ---- that's a huge jump, so the next wise thing he did was to call back and drop it to 100; however, even that's quite a jump all at once.  He should have taken you to 75 for a week or 2, then on up to 100.  A lot of people run into much trouble when they up the dosage too fast.

I strongly suggest that you not wait 3 months to "fix this" -- you will only get worse.  You need to be going to a different doctor NOW, not 3 months from now.

I don't think I'm taking any of these med. you ask about. The only thing I take is Synthroid. I had blood work done around the first of June and my doctor was on vac. so another doc, changed my med, from 50mcg to 125mcg Synthroid that was on 06/22,then my doctor came back in and called and changed me to 100mcg Levothyroxine on 6/28. I go to the doc on 7/7 will return then and let you know what he said,I think I need to find a doctor who knows more about Thyroid Disorder.
Thanks for your ans. and help.Joyce1958

Can you post your most recent labs?  TSH, FT3 and FT4?  Also, please post the reference ranges, since these are lab specific, so must be taken directly from your own lab report.
