TSH Levels High

I have been trying to get pregnant for 6 months.  My OB just informed me that my TSH level is 26 and is too high.  This seems abnormally high, however, I am not exhibiting any signs of hypothyrodism.  I am 37 years old, 5'5" and weigh 120lbs.  I do not have any problems with energy level or depression.  I feel fine every day.  I do eat more carbohydrates than I probably should so I could reduce that.  My question is how serious is this?  Is this something that I can change my diet and take some medication and get under control so that I can get pregnant or is this something that combined with my age is going to make pregnancy very difficult and so maybe I should consider other alternatives?  Also, what are the chances that this result is a mistake given that I have no symptoms?  I didn't know TSH levels could even go that high. Thank you so much!

Thank you so much for your reply.  It was very helpful.  I made an appointment with an endocrinologist and will get on some meds.  Thanks again.

Hi,

a TSH of 26 means you are hypothyroid.  It is very important for a healthy and successful pregnancy that your thryoid is working properly or you are properly medicated.

Target TSH during pregnancy is about 1.0 and FT3 and FT4 should be in the upper half of the reference range.

You need to get your TSH down before gettign pregnant.  Once you get pregnant likeely your meds will need to be adjusted by 20 - 50% over the course of the pregnancy.  Your doctor should test monthly during the pregnancy to monitor levels.

Without treatment you chance of a healthy pregnancy is low.  With treatment your chances are very good.  Likely you will need to be on thyroid meds for the rest of your life.

Hope this helps.
