TSH level 23.57

I hvae been hypothyroid for over 25 years.  I am now 55 years old.  I have been on Armour thyroid for years, then they switched me to Synthroid. It really didn't work for me.  Switched back to Armour and worked for about a year.  Now last week my TSH level was 23.57; also BUN was 30H; cholesterol 233 and LDL 166.  They are putting me on Crestor for cholesterol.  My concern is the thyroid levels.  I just get so tired and put on so much weight when the levels are off.  Anyone have any suggestions?

Crestor is not only hard on your Liver, it is highly contra-indicated if you have hypothyroidism.

If your doctor got your hypothyroidism under control, your high cholesterol, which is a symptom of hypo, would lower itself.

I think you are getting poor care. There is no excuse at all for your TSH to be 23.57 if you have been treating this for over 25 years. You should be getting your blood checked every six weeks for a while after any thyroid med change, and every three months once you are at a good level.

You may want to consider seeing another doctor.

My GP checks my cholesterol levels each year and they have consistently getting higher every year.  She has wanted to put me on Crestor for the past 2 years but I just can't see taking another medication. I take the Synthroid and also a harmone replacement, and just didn't want to HAVE to take another pill each month.  However, she is insisting that I begin taking the Crestor each month to lower the cholesterol since it has gone up each year.  I can't see that killing me, so I haven't been too worried about it.  I am more concerned with the hypothyroidism that I can't get under control mainly because it makes me feel so bad and put on so much weight. 5 years ago I used to be 130 lbs, and now I am fast approaching 190 lbs.  They do check the thyroid levels every 6 months or so.

Are you getting your thyroid levels checked every three months?

Personally, I'd rather have high cholesterol than take meds for it, but that is my preference. In fact, I do, and I won't.
