TSH of 121.66

i have been hypothyroid for about 7-8 years and take levothyroxine.  I few months ago i had my routine labwork to check my tsh levels which came back at a 3...very good.  i continued on the same dose of medication.  now 3 or 4 months later....i had my tsh rechecked after feeling really depressed/emotional, tired-no energy-fatigue, muscle aches, and a feeling of fullness in my throat, and my tsh came back at 119.650, so me and my doctor naturally thought the labs had really made a mistake, so I had them repeated at the hospital and it came back at 121.66.  What would cause the tsh to be THAT high....mine have never been above around 12? i have an ultrasound being done on my thyroid next week, but should I be concerned?

Hi,

for some reason your thyroid is getting worse /failing.

What was your original dose of T4?

The fullness in your throat could be a goiter caused by the stimulation of the high TSH.  The fatigue, muscle pain and depression can also be explained by the high TSH / low thyroid hormones.

You will need to increase your meds significantly.  Maybe your Dr. can refer you to an endocrinologist for further investigation on why this has suddenly gotten worse.

That TSH is pretty high, It seems your thyroid and or your medication is not working, the pituitary sends a signal to your thyroid (This is the TSH)telling your thyroid to secrete more hormones into your system, when your thyroid is not working, the pituitary send more TSH, hence the high TSH. What is the strength of the Levo you are on? I had a TSH of only 6.0 but Levo(Generic) would not budge it, MY endo switched me to Synthroid and within 6 weeks it dropped to 0.078, Do you see an Endocrinologist or a General MD? An Ultra Sound gives a good picture of your thyroid and tells them about size, (Inflamation) Nodules etc.
Once the test is done they will re-adjust your meds or change it.
They found mine was enlarged also (Hashimoto's Thiroiditis) which your body's  T Cells (Imune system) attacks your thyroid because does not recognize it and attacks it, this is what causes the inflamation. Good Luck on your test
