TSH

I had my thyroid checked and my TSH came back at  26.490.  My Dr. does not even know what that means.  he has never seen anything like that.  The ratio is 0.450-4.500.  it could be a computer glitch or lab error, but just wondering if anybody else has had this experience??? thanks.

The TSH is a pitutiary test and this pitutiary sends a signal  to the thyroid telling it produce real thyroid hornones Free T3 and Free T4. It looks as through your thyroid is low and not working right. Are you stressed more so right now than usual? Have you had abnormal tests like this in the past? What brought you to the doctor and how did they decide to run the test?

If this is more of a stressful time - if you have been on synthetic estrogen for a while - or if you have been comsuming alot of soy lately - this could be part of why that test was so high.

also if you havent had it checked yet you should have your free T3 checked now and every 6-12 months if it was normal. make sure the doc orders free T4 and free T3 not total!

you need to change doctors. it means you are developing hypothyroidism (low thyroid). you will need to start on levoxyl T4 soon and if you are having symptoms you will gradually start feeling better. you will need your TSH and Free T4 done every 4-6 weeks until you get your TSH down to normal. you may also want to have your TPO antibodies checked to see if you have developed hashimotoos thyroiditis. any doctor who doesnt know what this means and didnt call an endocrinologist or send you to one should not be practicing medicine.IMHO. ggod luck.
