Throat tightness

Always when I eat Chinese food, my throat will start gradually tightening up to the point where I can't eat, my throat and upper chest feel like they're on fire, my eyes water -- this lasts for two or three minutes and then it goes away and I can finish my meal.   Do you think there is something in the food which causes this?

I agree with Redhead....and a trach is something you would NEVER want to have.
Its a tube inserted into the neck bypassing the throat and the tube is inserted into yr trachea and goes down into yr lungs to allow you to breathe.
And its NOT a small tube either.
Very nasty proceedure but life saving when done.
Avoid ALL MSG and when you eat Chinese food...tell them NO MSG.

Best to not eat Chinese food! Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) is in a lot of asian cooking.
The best thing is to ask them NOT to add it to your food.
I often get burning tongue and little ulcers that sting like mad, luckily mine is only a mild case.  My sister has a similar reaction as you do, she ended up in ER with severe low blood pressure and difficulty breathing.

My main concern for you is; if you are having tightness in your throat, you may be developing a severe reaction to the MSG. I seriously suggest you make sure you avoid MSG as much as you can. You may well get a reaction one day that makes your throat totally close up and then you will need to have a tracheotomy just to breathe.

Helloooo yest as said the food contains MSG bad for the thyroid.  As I live in Hong Kong MSG can be found in most sauces and is also used by adding it into the table salt containers found on tables in restaurants.  The MSG enhances the flavour of foods and I have even made a point of taking my own Himalayan sea salt with me when I visit any restaurants.  I was told that a number of restaurants add MSG to their table salt and it is a given in Chinese food.  Best is to ask for non MSG containing food.  Other symptoms may be that you get a bad headache, dehydration as it also makes you thirsty and then people go even more off the track by having Coke or fizzy drink to quench their thirst, some develop a skin rash or severe body aches and experience fatigue - I am one of those who do not tolerate MSG at all and have the same experience as you.

Blessings
