Thyroid Cancer History

Hello. I have recently been told that I have a 9.3mm and a 5mm thyroid nodule. I saw a surgeon and he said that my largest nodule is just under the biopsy recommended size. However, he said that if I had a familial history of thyroid cancer that would change things. Well, I found out yesterday that my mom was just diagnosed with papillary thyroid cancer. Is this type of thyroid cancer strongly hereditary? My father also has cancer, but his is a Liposarcoma. I feel like a walking time bomb! When I saw the surgeon before I knew my mothers diagnoses he said that there was a 50/50 chance that my largest nodule would have enough cells in the biopsy sample to be determinate. So, what would the next step be. If they biopsy would I even get a definate answer? Thanks so much for your time!

Just wanted to post again and let you know that I did not have any cancer in my nodule.

My mom had pappillary.  I really do feel hers was related to her radiation to her neck and breast area.

back when my nodule was found, it was just under size to biopsy, but they tried anyway (with ultrasound to guide them) they did get reading on it and it was negative.

My mom recently had thyroidectomy due to papillary cancer.  So I share your feelings.

Now my doctors say that this changes everything for me, my nodule is growing, I have family history, and my nodule is complex (partially hard) so I am going for my Thyroidectomy this week (hopefully partial). Rapid test is said to be the most accurate, but I waited and watched mine grow a few times before I got to this point.  Another big factor is if your nodule is solid or cystic.  Solid is more of a concern I am told.

I guess I will find out if this is really hereditary.
