Thyroid Follicular Neoplasm

Hello,

I recently had an FNA done that came back stating I have follicular neoplasm? The dr recommends taking the left lobe out to be biopsied. I was so floored that I didnt really know what to ask. His nurses are scheduling the surgery. Should I get a second opinion? It's not really that I distrust the Dr, but shouldnt you get a second opinion before surgery? And if so how do I go about it. Is it risky for me to wait a few months( like after my sons graduation from highschool to have this done. I am afraid that the recovery process will interfer with prom, senior activities and graduation. I dont mean to sound trivial but this is a big time for our family and him, but I also don want to risk my health. I feel like i acted very irresponsible by not asking more questions at the dr's office, but i was so confused about what to do and how to do it....any advice at all would be greatly appreciated.

In some cases the core biopsy or proton resonance imaging can be used to differentiate between follicular adenoma [benign] and follicular variant of papillary carcinoma [malignant].
Many of doctors stll recommend to remove the nodule.

I also had a biopsy with the same result. According to the Endo that I saw surgery was necessary because it's not 100% sure it's not cancerous.  The reason for surgery is they need to do furthur biopsy on the lobe to determine if it is benign. When are they scheduling your surgery? The surgery only requires an overnight stay in the hospital. The recovery is pretty quick. About 2 weeks after surgery you should be able to get out and be ok.  I think if all that is required of you is to attend your son's graduation ceremony, you'd be fine.
I'd call the doc office and see if you can wait. They should be able to give you an answer.
I waited about 3 months from the time of my biopsy to the surgery because the doc said it would be fine.
