Thyroid Mass Findings

My husband had an ultrasound done last week that revealed that the left thyroid lobe is enlarged, nodular and heterogeneous.  There is a mass, heterogeneous and partially cystic measuring 2.4x2.1x1.3cm and a larger mass also heterogeneous solid and partially cystic measures 3.9x4.1x3.6.

Our question how critical is the skill of the Dr. that performs the FNA?  Also, is there anything from the description of the masses that will alleviate some anxiety while we wait for the FNA results?

Those are pretty big nodules, they will probably have to come out eventually regardless of the biopsy result.  Does he have any symptoms?

Many people have enlarged, nodular thyroids and live perfectly happily.  The heterogeneous nodules means they are partially fluid filled and partially solid. It means they are changing from one to the other, from fluid to solid or the other way round.
Only the FNA can give conclusive results.

The doctor should use Ultrasound to guide them to the nodules. It is not a life threatening issue if they don't. It is just far better for them to hit the target than to play darts at a board blindfolded.
Good luck
