Thyroid nodule found

To: Dr Lupo
I have recently been informed that I have a 2MM nodule on the right side of my thyroid.  I am sceduled to have it biopsied in Sept.  My question is, Why have my labs come back normal for the past 10 years?  I have been asking for answers about all my symtoms and my Dr. has been doing all the blood work, it comes back in the normal range, when I finally insisted that a ultra sound be done, that is when the nodule was found.  I have a very strong family history of this (every female on the maternal side) and was told 10 years ago to have this checked.  Can this condition hide itself for so long, and should I worry about it being cancer???

40% shot at getting a diagnosis doesn't sound like good odds.  What steps do I take if I don't get a diagnosis????  The left measures 5.1 x 1.6 x 1.3 cm.  The isthmus measures 2 mm.  The gland is normal in echogenicity.  A 1.6 x 0.8 x 1.0 cm solid isoechoic nodule identified in the lower pole on the right,  (This was taken right off the radiologist report to my Dr.) I don't understand most of this and am just starting out on this road.  I don't know weather to be happy because they finally found a reason for all my systoms or worried because of cancer.  I DO NOT have a family history of cancer only heart desease, but I do have a family history of thyroid desease.

Was the nodule smooth and round?  Vascular?  Calcifications?  All these factor in to the diagnosis, but none are true indicators for cancer, the biopsy might or might not tell you more.  I had totally normal thyroid function, but I did have cancer.  I had four nodules, three were solid and round, one was mixed and round, the mixed one had a 1.5 cm cancerous tumor in it.  All were vascular, I had no calcifications they could see.  I was getting hoarse, having strange periods, my blood pressure spiked, sore joints, lots of symptoms.  You can have totally normal thyroid numbers and cancer.  Get the biopsy, you have about a 40% shot of getting an actual diagnosis and if you do, then go from there.

Thank you,  If I can get the right Dr. and meds, then will I be able to get back to myself or close to it?   I would like to stop eating every ones leftovers at the dinner table. Aching all over my body.  Loose some of this weight and keep it off.  and get my lapido back, my husband would like this also.  I don't want to expect this to cure everything, but would like to know that I can get back on tract again, and close to my old self.  Mu Dr. is a GP, so I will be asking him to send me to a specialist in this field.  I want someone that is new wave and not old school.  I don't want a band aid, I want a cure.  Am I hoping for too much?  Rusty

Do You any (thyroid) lab results to post so that we can see exactly what they are...please post the range as well..

Most people find it hard to lose weight when their thyroid levels are off (hypo)..that could be your case as well...

Thank you for responding.  I got the info by phone from my Dr. so I may have not heard correctly about the size.  It must be a 2cm nodule, because he ordered the biopsy to be done and we will go from there.  I always had a hard time keeping weight on (Enemic, and under 110 lbs. even after childbirth)  Then I gained 45 lbs in one year and no matter what I do i can't loose anything, and just keep gainging more (Along with all the other thyroid symtoms).  My Dr. feels this could be the problem.  I am still wondering what the treatmient would be and if this weight is going to finally go away???
Thank you for you info,

Just so that you will know in the future, questions here will be answered by other patient's in the same position as yourself..including me. There is a forum that is answered by Dr. Lupo, however it is like pulling teeth to post a question..lol

Your nodule is 2mm or 2cm. Normally a nodule under 1cm is not biopsied and monitored only. Most times, the labs will come back in range although there is a nodule.
Most nodules cause no pain or symptoms. Although a small percentage of nodules are cancerous, most are not.

Being that thyroid issues are hereditary in your family, monitoring is very important...
