I feel for you. The pains and migraines are terrible, let alone trying to eat. I've had TMJ since a small child. My teeth are actually ground down flat and my gums have receaded up. I also used the mouth piece. I don't wear my mouth piece now; but, when I do start with the grinding sounds my husband will wake me up.
I hope you have recieved your new mouth piece, and I hope it is working for you. Take care.
At first I thought it was tooth infection making my jaw sore and went to the dentist. He said my teeth were sensitive but fine. My doctor then diagnosed TMJ and prescribed low dose anti inflamatories and told me to rest my jaw, not press my teeth together and to eat soft foods. After months of this I went to a different dentist (as mine was away) with a tooth ache and was told I needed a root canal. TMJ disapeared after Root canal. I know I am one of the lucky ones. My jaw still clicks and does not open wide, but no pain. Just thought it was worth others checking and rechecking teeth just in case!
My dentist said he had similar for 5 years because of a previously done root canal which appeared successful but obviously wasn't and he was finally pain free.
Good luck
Cheers Lisa
I also have a hypothyroid and severe TMJ. June 2008 my TMJ flared up real bad and i could not figure out why. In novemer I was diagnosed with multinodular goiter. I thought somehow they were connected but both the TMJ and thryoird specialist told me it wasn't. I used to have constant migranes and i guess after taking to many medicines like advil i got an ulcer, so i can't take anymore pain killers unless i want to flare up teh ulcers again. I have to suck up the pain.
Hi Rachel....I also am a member of the night mouth piece club...lol When I am low on thyroid hormone my jaw aches really bad. Once I get optimal again, it does let up a lot.
Your right....the price of our "appliances" is outrageous!
Do you use warm moist heat packs on your jaw?? It usually helps me.
