Considering Dropping my dose base on symptoms...

I was diagnosed with Hypothyroid a year ago and was given 150mcg of levothyroxine.  Everything seemed towork out and I started losing weight and all that good stuff... Then I quit taking methadone 3 months ago (after being on it for almost 8 years for an injuy) and my body/mind have recovered from issues I didnt even realise I was experiencing while on the methadone..

My point bieing....  Im starting to think my body has recovered my thyroid also.. Im not sure how much, but I have these issues where I am sweating just from SITTING!!!  Ill sitin a chair and my belt-line andgroin region will develop sweat (and the sweat has a strange smell that I compare to a multi-vitamin-like smell)..  Google seems to bring up HYPER-Thyroid has a possibility...  Im broke, uninsured, but SICK of this funny sweat issue!!  Im now considering dropping my levothyroxine dose in half in an attempt to see if the symptomsgo away or improve some.. My fear is I dont want to gain weight as a result of dropping the dose...  How long should I try the half-dose??

I realise I need to get blood work done, and will as soon as humanly possible.. Until then, any advice????  I HATE HATE HATE sweating like that (and not to fond of the smell either)...

You bet! lol

Although at this very moment, I am up in the country sitting with a laptop on my lap using wireless internet with gale force winds lol.
The internet keeps dropping out too lol.
Tree branches have broken all over the block and even cast iron garden furniture (the heavy sort)  has landed all over the place from the winds.
But what the heck lol.
I'm in the country....relaxing, not stressed and enjoying the fresh air.
The tree branches and the garden furniture can wait until the morning when its light outside lol.

But your more than welcome to jump on a plane (watch the turbulance lol) and come stay with me.
(((hugs)))

Yes I pay taxes....23c in the $.
But dont pay for blood tests at the time of having them done.
It is all covered under our government medical scheme.
Our taxes pay for healthcare, roads construction etc so Iguess I do pay in a way but what I meant was that I dont pay a fee to get a blood test done at a lab.
The government foots the bill.

Even the drop in 25mcgs may be big - usually the T4 meds are moved up slower for some.

Hormones is a powerful things whether med induced or natural :)

I think it has something to do with your thyroid too. Maybe things have started to even out for you now.

Sorry to say.... testing would be the best options for you right now.

Good Luck

I do have elevated heart rate. Im also T2 diabetic..  Im also wondering if food affects it, because some days I have mild bouts of sweating and others It is waterworks!!  I also smell that same strange vitamin-like smell in my urine and bowel movements (same smell that I pick up from the sweat in my waist and groin-region)...

Ive read up on methadone withdrawl and didnt see anything about long term sweat issues.. I went thru some profuse sweating for a couple weeks after quitting that I clearly associated with withdrawl, but most symptoms where very mild as I stepped down very gradually....

I got a job yesterday and start soon, so FIRST chance I get im gettin those tests as im convinced its my thyroid... Just got a strong feeling about this one.

check out methadone withdrawal and see if this is a side effect of that. It could be.  Hang in there. Believe me, you don't want to mess up that thyroid.

Are you having any other symptoms besides sweating? any PVC's, elevated heart rate, elevated temp?

That would be something to better gauge it by than just sweating. that could be from other hormones or glands. Your profile does not say if you are male or female or your age. If you are female, this could be from your reproductive hormones out of balance.

Plus your body could just be reacting to getting the methadone out of your system.

I am not saying that this is what it is, it is just a possibility, and the thyroid is something you do not want to play hit or miss with, so it would be better to get it tested and know for sure.

I think you do pay for your tests...how high are your taxes?  Somebody IS paying for it, even if you don't pay any taxes.

hi,
agree with the others that halving your dose is too dramatic.  if you were to reduce should only be by 25mcg, to see if it impacted your symptoms. You would need to try this change for about 6 weeks.

Of course best to do testing, but if you can't, then if you will change make it small so that if you haven't had some recovery and do go hypo it won't be too far or too hard to recover from if you have to increase dose again.

HealthCheckUSA.com has thyroid panel test for $85. Pay online , you get paperwork to go to one of their labs - chances are are there is one near your city if you are in the US (don't know were you are). There are also cash doctors starting to crop up for the unemployed and uninsured. One family practice doc in my town will look at a lab test and write a prescription for only $35, he does not accept insurance at all.

Hope this can help you.

You may HATE, HATE, HATE the sweating, but the answer to cutting your dose in half is NO, NO, NO.  That is way too big an adjustment and will most likely send you right back to being hypo.  I'm afraid there is no alternative but to get FT3, FT4 and TSH tested, especially after coming off meds you've been on for eight years.  You simply cannot adjust thyroid meds blindly.  Get your tests...it'll be the best $150 you ever spent.
