Ultrasound of the thyroid gland

My sister age approx 30 years get the ultrasound of the thyroid glands abd get the following report:
Please advice what can we do? Thanks in advance and regards.

Observation: Ultrasound of the thyroid gland

10MHZ high frequency probe is used for the evaluation of thyroid tissue.

Thyroid gland is visualized in the paratracheal space and appears enlarged along its isthmic and the left lobe region. There is a complex pre dominantly cystic lesion seen along the isthmus and the left lobe, measuring 2.4 x 2.1 cm in size. It has moderately thick walls and shows tissue componenets with cystic changes seen within the nodule. Doppler examination shows mild increased vascularity along its margins.
Right lobe shows no cyst or nodule.
Rt Lobe measures 2.6 x 1.8 cm in size
Lt Lobe measures 3.3 x 2.8 cm in size

Adjacent carotid and jugular vessels have preserved neurovascular sheaths.

Carotid doppler examination shows normal pulsations.

No enlarged lymph nodes are seen in the cervical region.

IMPRESSION: Ultrasound of thyroid gland shows a complex predominantly cystic nodule in the isthmus and left lobe region of the thyroid, measuring 2.4 x 2.1 cm in size, suggestive of a follicular adenoma with cystic changes. Advise FNAS if increased in size.

Also, thyroid disease can be hereditary. If she ends up having thyroid disease, I suggest you get yours checked, too.

An adenoma is good, a benign tumor, no cancer. Many, many people have adenomas on their thyroids. I have four.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adenoma

The suggestion is to give her an FNA if the tumor grows. An FNA is a fine needle aspiration, a biopsy, where they inject a small needle into the tumor, usually taking three samples, to see if any of the tumor has turned to cancer. I had the FNA on my nodules. It was less painful than a trip to the dentist, and I didn't need anyone to drive me home.

Your sister should follow up on this regularly. If her doctor wants to do the FNA, then I suggest she do it.

Also, is she suffering from any pains, depression, fatigue? People with thyroid disease tend to get nodules.

If so, then she should get this thyroid bloodwork:
TSH
FT3
FT4
Anti-TPO
TGab

Be warned, my doc did not see the need for the bloodwork because my TSH was 'normal', but his definition of normal is changing in the medical community. After I switched doctors, I had the Anti-TPO test and found out I have Hashimoto's Thyroiditis. If she is feeling lousy, just demand the bloodwork, even if the doctor is hesitant.

Take care...
