Ultrasound results

Hello,

In 2009 my ultrasound showed a multinodular goiter and there was no follow-up. I just had another ultrasound and the results are very different and making me quite nervous. I can't see my doctor until Wednesday and was hoping someone could help me out in understanding them.

The right lobe of the thyroid measures 5.00 cm x 1.90 cm x 1.80 cm.
The left lobe of the thyroid measures 4.60 cm x 1.50 cm x 1.20 cm.
The isthmus is 0.30 cm thick.
Glandular echotexture is normal.
There is a right thyroid 1.9 x 1.0 x 1.2 cm complex nodule with cystic as well as
peripheral solid and septated components. There are associated tiny echogenic
foci/microcalcifications.
No left thyroid nodule is demonstrated.
IMPRESSION:
Right thyroid 1.9 cm complex nodule. Given the size and sonographic appearance,
ultrasound-guided biopsy recommended.

Your nodule is NOT hypoechoic which lowers the chances of malignancy.
Need to know condition of lymph nodes for more accurate estimate, but currently the chance of cancer is 15%.
Be sure that doctor uses ultrasound with Doppler power flow during biopsy to avid indeterminate results!

It's interesting because my thyroid levels are fine and have always been fine. I know I'm going to need the fna but all the terminology and microcalcifications are making me very nervous.

It sounds like the next step would be a fine needle aspiration to make sure no cancer cells are present. It's a very simple procedure guided by ultrasound they use tiny needles to take some of the tissue and look at it under the microscope. It is then sent to the lab for further testing. With luck it will come back clean and you just have a goiter and need to go on synthroid for hyper or hypo thyroidism.
