If you run some Google searches on "thyroid cancer in esophagus" there are some case results. There are also many, many studies showing that the nodules can "look" like they are in the esophagus because they are displacing it.
They should be able to easily get a biopsy of the ones in the esophagus by doing an endoscope (minor outpatient procedure under anesthetic).
Regardless of where it may be, if it is one of the two primary thyroid cancers (papillary or follicular) is is relatively easy to find and kill.

I have not read any info about thyroid cancer spread to the esophagus.
The MRI imaging may be helpful to see the nodules in the different projections.
