Vitamins / Minerals and Thyroid Med Timing.......

Most of us know to separate vitamins and minerals 4 hours from our thyroid med. BUT for those who take a dessicated med 2 or 3 times per day, this becomes a challenge.

Example:I take 75% of Erfa dessicated t3/t4 combo at 6:30 AM, 25% at 11 AM and the remaining 25% at 4 PM - complicated but their it minimal T3 'rollercoaster' that way.  Magnesium is best at night - thats easy. But B vitamins are kind of senseless to take in the evening - you might not sleep. I have learned about B injections - there is a inconvenience factor there for some people.

How many take B vitamins in the sublingual form?

I'm thinking if B vits dont go into the stomach it wont interfere with thyroid med absorbion so you should be able to take a B vitamin sublingually close to thyroid meds? This has not been talked about on the forum. Anyone do this for this reason?

Comments please.

toots:   30 to 45 min is what I wait for food in the morning, but I-m consistent with it, that IS the key. Swallowed vitamins - a on no. Get one of those small single pill holders for the afternoon - put it in your pocket in the morning. Before bed? The T3 might keep you awake and there will be no t3 in you for the day. And if you take t3 (in dessicated) your body will not convert it like it used to, so it will depend on what you get from the dessicated. T3 only lasts 4 hours in the body.

Barb: I guess if its sublingual, I could take it in the morning, just cautious. Someone here must have tried this??

I don't take dessicated, but I think it's okay to eat 1/2 to an hr after taking it, like it is with synthetics, but you need to wait at least 4 hrs before taking vitamins/minerals as they inhibit the absorption of your med.

I take my dose of Tirosint (T4 med) when I get up at 3:30 am, then a dose of generic T3 at 7:00 am, vitamins at noon, and more vitamins at night.  I, too, tend to get busy and forget, so I set alarms on my cell phone to go off at 7:00 am, noon and 6:00 pm; that way I don't forget.

LM - I'm sure you would be okay with that sublingual B12 at noon.  I hope it works quicker for you than it does for me, though.  Even taking the shots, it doesn't kick in that quickly. If I take my shot at bedtime, I'm pretty good to go in the morning, but for me, taking it at noon, would be getting myself "wired" for bedtime.

BUT, with the sublingual, you should be able to take it in the morning; maybe with or right after breakfast. Since it's not going through your stomach, it shouldn't affect how your thyroid med works.

Oh my, I've recently started dessicated thyroid and have been only waiting half an hour till I eat and then take the rest of my vitamins and supplements.  I can't schedule taking dessicated thyroid in the afternoon cause most likely I will forget with all the running around.  Can I take thyroid meds before bed??

Thanks Barb. I'm leaning toward the sublingual B12 to take between thyroid doses around lunch (noon). Maybe it'll be a good energy boost in the afternoon.....we'll see.

My math was a little off. I take about 75% Etfa at 6:30 AM, 12.5% at 11 AM and the remaining 12.5% around 4 PM.

According to my research, you are right - any vitamin that doesn't go into the stomach won't interfere with the thyroid med; therefore, it you can do sublingual, you should be okay.  I've also read that liquid vitamins don't interfere as much as those in pill form.

I take my B12 in the form of weekly shots.  Contrary to popular belief B12 shots don't make me feel all energetic the instant the med hits my muscle - it takes at least a few hours (sometimes longer) for me to get the effect, so I often "do" take them before I go to bed - that helps me wake up "ready to go" in the morning.......

I've seen B vitamins in the health food store in both liquid and sublingual......
