Voice Changes How Long

3 weeks post op for thyroidectomy.   Had virtually no voice issues until about 4 days ago when I started to get a little hoarse.   It almost feels as if I'm starting to get laryngitis.   I am talking more than I was post op but I'm wondering if this is normal and if it's happened to any others?   Hot tea seems to help but my voice is definately weaker than it was right after the surgery.

I had left side of my thyroid taken out 3 weeks ago. My voice has been very hoarse I can't cough or clear my throat. Dr said wait another 3 weeks to see if it comes back on its own. Is this normal? I'm so nervous, any feedback would be so appreciated.  Andrea

Hi there,

I was reading your post and wondered how you are doing now a few months later? I had my surgery on 12/6 and 3 weeks later can talk but people can only hear me if they are right next to me. Talking on the phone is out of the question still at this point.

I'm hoping you are doing better? How is it going?

I've gotten my total thyroidectomy a week ago and I can't sing and shout and my phone doesn't recognize or even detect my voice. I am not an opera singer or somebody needs to speak all the time for living but I would like to have my voice back and all these concerned comments really scare me is there anyone out there that be able to sing and speak as before the surgery?

I had my total thyroidectomy two weeks ago and I am still suffering the extreme hoarseness of voice. It really worries me becasue I depend on my voice for living ( I am a professor). NET checked my vocal cord three days after my op and said my left side was weak moving and he would see me in a month time again.
I just read someone who said refluex may have  some effect too. I have this problem and was prescribed on Pantoloc before op by gastro specialist. I think I should go back on it as I did not take them all for getting ready for thyroid removal ( it was cancerous and spread to lymph nodes on neck area).
I wish my voice will return. Any experience out there,  please share. thank. Marcel

Hello inneedofanswers1816! It sure sounds like you've had a hard time. If you start a new forum thread with your symptoms and hopefully some labs with ranges, I'm sure you'll have some helpful people give you advice. Since this is under a listing about voice issues, I don't think as many people will see your request for assistance.

mrsomes: Good luck. Sorry I don't have any advice for you.

I had a total done in may of 2004. I still cannot yell, or sing anymore. I have gained over 100 lbs, despite working out. I sleep 12 hours a day at least due to being tired all of the time. I have a short term memory loss and have noticed that I don't think as quickly on my feet as I used to. I also have achy joints, and my hair breaks off in the middle crown area of my head. I cannot take any air blowing on my skin either. I just want to find a way to lose the weight before i have a heart attack. I hate feeling at 30-40percent i have a family who needs me. i dont have a depression issue, or the usual problems with my skin. Actually, my surgery went quite well, and heled perfectly. I can hardly see the scar. If there are any of you that can give me some insight on te weight issue, please respond

My operation was on November 25, 2009.  I am still unable to speak normally and my voice is hoarse.  I am also unable to sing or shout.  Can anyone tell me how long it might take for me to get back my normal voice.

Are you taking any thyroid medication?  Why did they remove the Thyroid?  I had hoarseness, nodules, and other symptoms, had half the thyroid removed, then found cancer.  Had a TT, then waited for RAI.  During the extreme "hypo-hell" (seven weeks) when I did not get replacement hormone, my voice got worse and worse.  Then after RAI, when I had been on synthroid for a few days, my voice started coming back.  I am a singer, so that was important.  If you have been hoarse since the surgery, I would think it was some kind of shock or damage to the nerves...but if you are just now getting hoarse, I would think it is because you are hypo.  Check in with your Endo or ENT, it is probably just a hormone deficiency.

My vocal cord was paralyzed during surgery for TT.  It remained this way for 6 weeks.  I hadn't heard of it happening weeks after surgery.  It may not be paralyzed, but bruised.

I could have written this post! That is why I am back here on the site today.  I am just a little over 3 weeks post partial thyroidectomy and my voice had been doing great, 4 days ago I started to get hoarse  and I was wondering if I was getting laryngitis as well. I feel great otherwise and was wondering if maybe it was something to do with the surgery as well.

Hmm...not sure why you'd start feeling it now, that seems strange. I'm almost 5 weeks post op TT and I've had a terrible time. My voice was awful immediately after surgery and it's still bad...but getting better SLOWLY. My surgeon put the scope down my nose (ewww!!!) to look at my vocal cords--the right one was not moving. My voice is still weak/hoarse but I can speak a little longer/better now. Still gets tired/uncomfortable with too much talking. Can't sing. Sigh...

Hope things get better for you soon, I'd call your doc if it persists, but it's probably just overuse if you've been talking more recently.

I have read on many postings that the hoarseness of the voice is normal after a TT.
I never had it after TT, I had it BEFORE lol.
Your voice will return and doubt that its very much to worry about.
If you are concerned, it might pay to give your Surgeon a call or visit.
