What if it's not cancer?

So, I had my ultrasound and the dr called to tell me, based on the ultrasound results, i need to have a biopsy. I was wondering if it is not cancerous if I would still need to have my thyroid removed? There has been a lot of mention of that lately. I am currently hyper (GD).

Hello.  I had the biopsey and surgeon only removed half of my thyroid so no need for daily meds:)  Mine was not cancerous but a rare node that is not safe to leave there.  My levels before and after surgery are fine.  I just read something about making sure your salt is iodized...mine is not but I'm switching now.  Good luck!

If it isn't cancer, they rarely take the thyroid out. If the thyroid is in the throes of dying off as in Hashimoto's Disease they might. If you have a lot of nodules and it is swollen up (Multinodular goitre) causing difficulty in breathing and swallowing and medication hasn't helped it shrink down, they might.

Generally speaking though, if it is not a cancerous nodule and the result is DEFINITE that it is not cancer then they will leave the thyroid intact.
