Whey Protein & Hypothyroidism

I have a question or rather a myth: I am a hypo thyroid patient and therefore have tendency to put on weight. However, as of now my weight is perfectly in sync with my height as mentioned in medical charts. I have started training for gaining muscles, but i am not sure if i should be using whey protein as i heard that if i stop working out later at some point in time, I will start putting on weight!!! Is this a side effect of taking whey protein and discontinuing its use??? Moreover, does intake of whey protein interfere with the blood tests done to check the thyroid profile?

answers to these questions will be a great favor and highly appreciated.

I am 90 kgs and I take 50 grams of thyronorm medicine. I will reduce my weight to something like 85 and then I am planning for whey protein.I take medicine in the morning and workout in the evening. My thyroid is in control with this medicine from last one and a half year since inception of thyroid. Would it good to take protein with this kind of thyroid. Please reply.

If your thyroid is no longer working, nothing is going to make it work better.

There are several web sites which will calculate your BMR, simply by plugging in your age, current weight, height and activity level.

MedHelp's food diary will calculate calorie needs.

I agree that it's important to get enough calories.

Actually, it is better to exercise in the morning if you can. It helps your thyroid work better too.

Make sure to get enough calories. That is one mistake many people make when attempting to lose weight. They cut way back on calories, thus resulting in a deficit and wonder why they can't lose weight.

Thyroid disease used to be tested with Basal Metabolic Rate. If you do some research on the web there are two ways to find your BMR. Once you find it then plug it into a Harris-Benedict formula and find out the calories needed for your age, weight, level of exercise. The BMR shows what you need to maintain your bodily functions while at rest.

I lose weight easily and then my thyroid goes wacko and I gain it all back.

Good luck.

You've attached your questions to a very old thread and none of the previous posters are active on the forum anymore.

Yes, it's true that soy can inhibit absorption of thyroid hormone medications.

"Generally, it's best to wait four hours after taking thyroid medication to consume any products that contain soy. The same guidelines apply to other products that may impair the body's ability to absorb thyroid medication, including high-fiber foods, iron and calcium supplements, and antacids that contain aluminum or magnesium. "   Mayo Clinic.

Raw cruciferous vegetables have been shown to affect thyroid hormone synthesis; however, cooking them removes their goitrogenic properties.  The good we get from veggies far outweighs the risk.  I often eat raw cauliflower and other cruciferous veggies, but I typically do it later in the day, long after I've taken my thyroid medication for the day. I've never noticed a difference in the way my body absorbs the medication.

i am hypo and been trying to lose weight for the past year its been really hard having a balanced diet and keeping up with exercise, i just recently started to maintain a stable exercise routine and diet, my trainer recommended Whey Delight protein (infinite Labs) low carbs, i found in the ingredients that it has Soy Lecithin which is one of the things my doctor said not to take because it slows down the medicine effect; i take Eltroxin 100mg,

will this interfere with the hypothyroidism? Should i return it?
does Soy really interfere with the medication

I have also been told not to eat any cruciferous vegetables like cauliflower etc. but i sometimes do in the evening and i dont feel it really makes a difference, does it?

Sorry guys lots of questions!! very frustrated though :( Help

Whey protein is good for you and will help build muscle, but you have to keep up the exercise, too.

Not eating butter or cheese, doesn't mean your eating habits are excellent.  You need to eat lots of fruits and veggies, along with high protein, lean meats, etc.

You build stamina by working into an exercise routine, slowly.  Have you thought about trying yoga, along with other exercise?  Yoga concentrates on relaxation, stretching, breathing, etc and go a long way toward building stamina.

I have an under active thyroid, have been using whey protein isolate religiously, and my hair is just fine. Your statement is not backed up by science, and you seem to have chosen not to look at a variety of other reasons why your hair fell out. The thyroid can switch from being hypo, to hyper. If this occurred, it could easily have resulted in some hair loss. However, that is just one of a number of reasons you may have lost your hair. Sorry to hear it by the way, but I hope you'll further explore what is going on. I f your Doctor told you its the whey protein, perhaps its time for another Doctor. Sounds like something a Kaiser Doctor would say.

Ann_Nonymous  -OK, whey Protein didn't work for you fine, but don't call others that have had success using it liars.  I work out on a regular basis and have been taking whey protein for years with no problems. It has helped me gain muscle mass and lose fat weight in general. It has worked great for me. I use a Whey Protein that has no added sugars or artificial sweeteners.  I have been on thyroid meds for over 35 years and have no bad reaction to whey protein and only good.

STOP THE LIES!!!  Whey protein powder causes half of my hair to fall out over a two week period.  Do NOT--I REPEAT--do NOT use this if you have hypothyroidism and you are on Synthroid or Levothyroxine.  It CAN and DOES make your hair fall out by raising DHT levels.

Whey protein helps the body build muscle. When you exercise you need to repair the muscle by that protein intake it is necessary to ingest 1/2 hour after a workout. It is only good for you. I have been taking it for several years while being hypo. It has helped tremendously to achieve my weight loss goals and muscle gains. There is no side effect just watch how many carbs you are eating with this. It will not interfere with lab test results. We especially have to make sure we have a proper diet for maintaining weight. This will help you do it. I even put it in my coffe and on my breakfast cereal. Not many people know about this so glad to see you caught the secret....
