Explain Hashimoto's

I have Hashimotos, and after reading a lot of posts today it occurred to me that I really don't understand what it is as well as I should.  I know it is an autoimmune disease and will only get worse.  Does the thyroid eventually just stop working and you take meds for the rest of your life?  Also, I've read when you have one autoimmune disease you tend to develop others.  Does anyone know what other diseases might go along with this?  I am on meds and doing "fine" just not sure what the future holds.  I really should know what to look out for.
I really appreciate all the posts on this site.  Everyone is so helpful and supportive of each other...and knowledgeable!  I need to get up to speed.

I presume you are on a gluten free diet due to the Celiac.  I just wanted to find out if you are being adequately treated for the consequences of the Hashi's, since that seems to be the exception.  You certainly have some symptoms that are often associated with Hashi's.  What do your thyroid related test results look like, along with reference ranges shown on the lab report?  Also, if tested for Vitamin D, B12 and ferritin, please post those as well.

Go to any website, WebMD, Thyroid disease manager, etc. and search it, they will tell you everything.

Yes, your immune system keeps attacking your thyroid until it does not function at all.  At that time you are on total hormone replacement for the rest of your life.

You're also right that once you have one, you are more likely to develop another.  The list includes (but is not limited to) lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, celiac disease (gluten intolerance), fibromyalgia, etc.

Hashi's is the most prevalent cause of hypothyroidism in the U.S.  So, there are lots of us out there.  Welcome to the group!

I have Hashimoto's and Celiac diseases. I am tired all of the time. I can only sleep for 3 to 3 1/2 hours a night. I have bags under my eyes from not enough sleep to repair my body. It is a rough disease and so is Celiac. Good luck to you
I am scheduled for a biopsy of my thyroid next week. My throat is hoarse and my vocal cords have been frozen in place.{outward and bowed}
