Why would someone get very depressed on Synthroid?

When I was on 50 mg Synthroid, I would get very depressed (suicidal almost) every morning.

Here were my lab results during that time (doctor at the time did not test FT3):

06/06/11 TSH 1.23 -- Free T4 1.2

I felt MORE suicidal on 50 mg Synthroid than I did on no thyroid medication at all.

What should I have done in this situation and why do you think I became so depressed?

How long were you on the meds altogether?

The reason why I ask is that the body is not used to getting THryoid. And many people have all sorts of different reactions initially to getting the medication.  The body has to ajust to having Thyroid and not relying upon adrenals etc.

However many people will stop taking meds before they push through the body getting acclimated to hormone.  And they never get well because they are on again, off again and they continue or worsen the roller coaster ride they are on.

Going from 5 to 15 mcg of Cytomel is a pretty big jump. Even with the reduction of T4 med.

What symptoms are you having, how long have you had them?

Can you please repost your labs with the reference ranges?

If you were given a T3 medication (Cytomel) you must absolutely positively have a Free T3 test. If you don't or if you Dr has not done this then I'd HIGHLY recommend you find a new Dr. ASAP!

The doctor then added 5 mcg Cytomel (but also then reduced my Synthroid to 25 mcg). I felt great for about four days, but then back to miserable. I am going to try to get back on meds and I want to know what I did wrong the last time so that I can do it right this time. If I added 5 mcg Cytomel to my already 50 mg Synthroid and it made me feel great for only 4 days, WHAT should have been my next step?

Should I have upped my Synthroid to 62.5 and kept the Cytomel at 5 mcg?

I went to a different doctor and he then wanted me on 25 mg Synthroid and 15 mcg Cytomel which gave me a painful shock of adrenaline through my veins and I got frustrated and went off thyroid meds entirely.
