adding cytomel

I am switching from armour to synthyroid and was wondering should I ask my Doc to also put me on cytomel or wait and see what happens with the synthyroid only.

Thank you

I had a long talk with a pharmacist (sp?) yesterday and he said the reverse t3 test is a very good indicator to determine if you need t3. He runs a lab that compounds the exact amount of t3 necessary only time delayed so you get a slow release all day. He said that he believed that t3 for some was a cause for palpitations and anxiety but that more people than he believed was possible were in need of t3 based on a reverse t3 test?

AR,
thank you for catching my wording. I would not want to mislead anyone. I will try to do better next time. Thank you for your kind words, as well.

Fionna,
I know one time, I went to get my armour filled at the pharmacy. 30 mg every day. They were out of 30 mg's. THey had 60. I took those and a pill splitter and had a happy ending.

If you are wanting to stay on armour, then maybe you and your dr can do some configuring with the different mg's it does come in, to get the desired dose. Just a thought.

Also, I have read in so many websites, that it is best to divide the dosage up throughout the day. Do you do that? I have tried to that, and then I read where someone divided up the doses, but taking it in one dose worked best for her. It is almost a hit or miss thing with this thyroid business.

Either way (Armour or synthroid) ,I wish you the best in getting your med regulated. That is such a pain in so many ways.....take care

It's too bad that you have to switch meds after so many years.

It sounds like you may not need the cytomel. I would try the Synthroid for six weeks and then see how the Free T4 and Free T3 look. Test every six weeks for a few months until your levels are stable again and by then you should know if Cytomel would be helpful as well.

I hope you get back on track quickly.

Last year after been on armour for 25 years the Doc said I had hashimoto. My tsh, t3 and t4 was too high.

He took me from 150 to 120 armour. I felt better than I had in years.

That was also too much and he put me on 105 and I became very hypo, but he said the tests said I was getting too much.

He lowered it to 90 and now my tsh, t3 is fine, but t4 is low. There is no in between for 90 and 105.

That is why he wants to put me on synthroid.

The only thing that I can add is you left out one word that may lead to confusion.

You said;
"Since the introduction of Synthroid, and Big Pharma being what it is, has led drs to believe that it (Armour) is unstable. However, research has proven that to be untrue."

I added Armour in parenthasis(sp?), as I assume that was your thought. Other than that, I think you are asking the right questions and making good points and observations.

Hi Fionna,

You have a valid point about using synthroid only. Synthroid is T4 only, and cytomel is T3. Armour has both. Since the introduction of Synthroid, and Big Pharma being what it is, has led drs to believe that it is unstable. However, research has proven that to be untrue.

I am still wondering WHY he changed you. Were you having problems with the armour, is he a new dr for you, there are several things that could point out more as to WHY he is changing your med.

More than likely, your dr will want to try you on synthroid before adding the T3 drug. Make sure when they run your thyroid labs that they pull for a Free T3 and Free T4. If there is a big difference in the 3's then, hopefully, your dr will pick up on this and add cytomel. There is another poster here that is not able to tolerate T4 so she is being changed to cytomel only.

Monitor your symptoms. THey are a BIG indicator if your med is working.

AR can explain it better than I, so hopefully, He will point out what I left out.

He is switching me to synthyroid only right now. I have heard some people take cytomel also and I wanted to know about it in case I have some problems using the synthyroid only.

Why are you switching if the doctor wants to add T3 in addition to Synthroid?
