Need Help After Total Thyroid Removal!!

Hi Everyone My names Jen and I am 26 years old. Last April 2013 I had my thyroid totally removed becuase I had graves disease and none of the medications were working. I was pregnant at the time and had my son in Sept. Ever since I had my son my labs have been extremely high. I have done another uptake scan since then and also a thyroidblogin blood test and it has all came back normal. My question is why would my labs still be high if I do not have a thyroid anymore and all my labs besides my THS labs would be normal? My doctor keeps thinking I am taking synthroid to make them high but I have not had any synthroid since he took me off of it two months ago!! I see him on the 19th again but wanted to know if anyone else has ever been thought this. Thank you so much.

My Recent Labs are:

Thyroglobulin AB <1.0

Thyroglobulin Serum <0.1

Thyroglobuin RIA None

Thyroxine Free 2.67 (higher than normal)

Thyrotropin Senstive <0.015 Lower then normal

Wonderful!

Yes, beta blockers are often prescribed for people who are hyper.  Beta blockers slow the heart rate, which is usually elevated when hyper, and that also helps to make you feel calmer.  I've been taking beta blockers ever since I started on thyroid meds because I have a condition that makes me prone to tachycardia, and the thyroid meds made that worse.  Beta blockers have been around for a long time, and what few side effects they have tend to go away after a week or so (you might feel kind of "slow" for a while).  They're considered a very safe drug.

I went today and brought my record with me so he could see the labs. He treated so different it was a really nice change. He ordered a ultrasound to make 100% sure there was nothing left and ordered some blood work. I told him what was going on. He also gave me beta blockers? Is that normal. I dont him I was really nervous and he said to work with him to figure this out.

I'm glad you've made an appointment.  At least your military doctor's notes won't be swaying him, and you'll get a fresh look.  Best of luck, and let me know how it goes.

TSH changes throughout the day.  That's not a significant change.  Was anything else tested?

As I said before, if I were you, I'd gather up my labs and go see a different doctor.  Your current doctor's notes are following you...obviously the doctor you saw yesterday had seen your thyroid doctor's notes.  That immediately prejudices what he thinks, not to mention that doctors will very seldom speak against each other.  I suspect that might be even more true among military doctors.  Go see another doctor (probably civilian) who hasn't seen the notes, and let him come to his own conclusions/diagnosis.

Yours is a very unusual case.

I'd get an independent thyroid consult, even if you have to pay for it yourself.

My other doctor said I have a mental disorder and I am taking the pills and if my consult come out normal they are going to get me in trouble this is so unfair.

I was trying to pull them up but the system is down. My labs have been going up for about 4 months now. I didnt sleep at all last night. Im really upset he thinks I would do that. And more upset he would just assum and make me feel like crap.

Well, I'd definitely take the referral.  If you don't want his notes to follow you, you might refer yourself for a second opinion and just bring your lab results to the new doctor so that you're getting a truly "fresh" look.  Someone has to start thinking outside the box.

Do you have your labs from just before you stopped taking Synthroid?  Were you feeling very hyper then?

All my blood test says is Thyroid serum level and for my Thyrogloubin RIA it says nothing next to it I dont think they did that lab. It was a very bad day today I cried all day. I am in the military and if he puts in my notes I am self medicating I can get in  a lot of trouble. I would NEVER do that I have 3 babies at home. He gave me a refurral to see an outside doctor but I dont know what he put in his notes today :( I wont find out until tomorrow when I see my reg doctor. I havent been taking anything at all.
I am brusing all over, my hear still races, I still get hot, i get bad stomach pains and dirreah sorry TMI and also I shake but really only shake when I dont eat alot. My weight has been pretty much they same Im in the army so we work out a lot. I just need answers he made me feel like total crap and pretty much gave up on me :(.

He should never be condescending.  That's disgusting.

Can you check your lab report for me and tell me if it says what the methodology is for your FT4 test?  It should either be "direct dialysis" or "radio immunoassay" (RIA).  Also, what's the reference range?

Please also list your symptoms.

I went today to see him and he just accused me of taking pills again :( I told him if I could draw blood to test of synthriod I would. I cried in his office and he didnt care he said if I did like what he has to say I could get a second opion.

I know how frustrating it is when your doctor won't listen to you or won't believe you.  However, I also understand his dilemma...where is all that FT4 coming from?

Are you taking anything at all?  Perhaps a supplement from a health food store that might contain thyroid hormones?  I know this sounds odd, but could someone else be giving you medication?  I'm grasping at straws here, yes.  I've asked another member to read this thread as well, and we're both baffled because it's so highly unusual.

Not yet I see him on monday it just that when I see him he makes me feel bad because he always says im taking  synthroid but he hasent given me any in 2 months. I  just dont know what to do anymore.

I have to say that I'm as mystified as your doctor.  Without a thyroid and on no meds, your FT4 ought to be just about zero.  It's very puzzling if your uptake scan showed no regrowth.

I googled bruising and hyperthyroidism, and it is a symptom, but it's usually a symptom because hyper causes low platelet count, and you said yours was normal.  Was it low normal?

Has your doctor suggested where to go from here?  With your FT4 so high, something has to be going on somewhere in your body...

When I did my uptake scan last week they told me there was nothing they could see in my neck or my overies. (since cells can grow there too). No he didnt tell me that yet he seems to get mad at me but its nothing that I am doing I amnot on any medications. All he did were the labs that I posted up and those were done on the 5th. Yes I do have hyper symptoms but also Im always extremely tired. I have still been losing weight, i sweat all the time! The only difference now is that im always tried. Oh am I am always brusing! The did a platelet blood panal and it was normal but even if I bump into anything I have so many bruises on me. I need an answer :(

"I have done another uptake scan since then...and it has all came back normal."

Can you post the results of your uptake scan?  If you don't have a thyroid, your uptake scan shouldn't have been normal.

Thyroid tissue can grow back.  All of the tissue is never completely removed in a TT, and there can be regrowth.  Has your doctor mentioned anything about that?

Your FT4 and TSH, I agree with you, look like you still have Graves'.  Has TSI been retested?

Do you have hyper symptoms?

Im not on anything! havent been for 2 months. I just know my ranges are extremely high. I feel like im still dealing with graves but I have been brusing a lot too. My doctor keeps acting me if Im taking pills but I dont him NO!!! hes the only one that prescibes them to me so he should know that.

If your thyroid was totally removed, those labs are almost impossible, if you're not on meds.  Are you taking anything else?

How do you feel?

What's the range on your FT4?  Did your doctor test FT3?
