allergic to sythroid

I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism and underwent treatment with a minimal does of synthroid. At first I felt much better, but I soon developed lesions on my face, chronic diarrhea, and arrhythmias (which became quite frequent and troublesome. I also showed signs of hyperthyroidism) I was advised to go off the synthroid, and these symptoms disappeared. However, after a few weeks, the symptoms I had for hypothyroidism returned and worsened. I am told that my heart is in perfect condition, and that my arrhythmias were caused by the medication.

Can my thyroid levels be swinging back and forth (hypo-/hyper-), or am I allergic to synthroid as my doctor suggests? What are my alternatives to synthroid that may give me relief, but not trigger an allergic reaction like synthroid did? If my levels are bouncing back and forth, what can I do about treatment?

This is a very old post. Are you sure you're alergic to Synthroid? No mention of certain symptoms.

Could still be hypo. You might not be on the right dose.

A list of certain symptoms and latest blood test with free T3 levels will help others help you.

All Armour grain sizes are one color, I doubt its dyed white, dont know. The generic for synthroid as far as I remember, was also only white.

Its best to start a new post on this - more responses that way with Your headline.

You mentioned in your post you were swinging from Hyper to hypo right but you said that you were advised to go off Synthroid due to the other issues that were going on.

I would tend to believe that removing you off your meds was the reason for the swinging of your symptoms.

I feel for you and many people can react on any med. You may need to look into more natural options for you

I found out by fluke that when I was on Synthroid there is a red dye in the tablet Red DC9 I think it is called

Well that is the same red dye in Kool Aid and I broke out in hives as a kid everytime I drank it or ate frozen pops

Never had I had that happen in my adult years until I took Synthroid - Yep - I got hives on it - but it wasn't all the time - it was weird - it seemed to pop up once or twice a month and go away in a couple of days - yet I was on the med everyday.

I did switch meds for other reasons than the hives and do much better on it. I don't have hives popping up now though either.

Yes, a lot of people cannot tolerate Synthroid, because it is synthetic, it's man made, it''s not very natural. I know of many friends and family who did horrible on Synthroid, but did much better on Armour, and they even got rid of their Myxedema skin, which Synthroid cannot fix.
Good Luck, there are so many other options out there, you might want to research the benefits of taking a "Desiccated Thyroid hormone" as well.

The symptoms you describe sound like an allergic reaction.

Hyperthyroidism does not cause lesions to suddenly appear.

Although it is posible that your levels are swinging, put that aside for now and focus on the fact that you could not tolerate the Synthroid. It might be the fillers, in which case there are several brands of levothyroxine, each made with different fillers.

It may be that you cannot tolerate the active ingredient, although it is exactly the same hormone your body produces. If that is the case, a product like Armour may be better tolerated.

It may be that you have adrenal issues and the thyroid medication, regardless of what type, is agravating the adrenals, causing symptoms, although I don't know what that would have to do with lesions forming.

Just a few more thoughts.

Do you mean allergic to the fillers and colors? I also cannot take synthroid for that reason.

I switched over to unithroid and have been fine. I take a unithroid/cytomel combo.

But, I must say, if your levels are bouncing all around... mine were when my problem was really pituitary, not thyroid. Is the test they are doing TSH? TSH is really a pituitary test, not so much thyroid - it measures what the pituitary is telling the thyroid, not what the thyroid is doing.

Make sure (get copies!!! now and forever!!!) the doc is testing TSH and free T3 and free T4 as the frees test what the actual thyroid is doing.  The regular T3 and T4 do as well but not to the same extent.

Get a doctor to check out the pituitary. I know - I had every color of thyroid medication there was for a while - it was a mess. If your doctor scoffs, get a new doctor. He then does not really understand the TSH test.
