No TSH

I have been struggling with near undetectable TSH's for years, since the birth of my triplets 13 years ago, all have been < 0.01. This was evident during my pregnancy as well, at which time my T3 uptake was 1.52 (norm 0.7-1.24) and T4- 21.7 (norm 4.5-11.5). I had severe hyperemesis gravidarum with both of my pregnancies (1st was singleton birth) requiring TPN both times. When the boys were five I stopped having menses (age 33). I continued to have undetectable TSH's with low Free T4's from 0.73 to 1.01 (norm 1.0-2.0) and Free T3's smack dab in the middle of normal values each time. Prolactin has been variable but only mildly elevated on occasion (highest value 28.1 {Norm 3.0-18.6}. I was tired all the time, gained weight like crazy despite being extremely athletic, and each doctor I talked to diagnosed me with depression and tried a new antidepressant. I sought answers from specialists at Mayo who did a MRI which showed no pituitary abnormality, and they told me I was subclinically hyperthyroid with ovarian failure, despite normal FSH to LH ratio, estradiol, AM cortisol, and normal testosterone levels. Thyroglobulins, TPO antibodies, Thyrotropin Receptor Antibody and TSI were all negative, TBG was slightly elevated at 28.7 (norm 10.3-24.9). I still struggle with being tired all the time, and I've given up the idea of anyone telling me what is causing the problem. My concern now is that my son (one of the triplets, who by the way are all developmentally delayed) has the same TSH as me (<0.01), with low normal Free T4 and normal T3, I am concerned that this thyroid abnormality may affect his health. There are no others in my family with endocrine abnormalities (my mother had a pheochromocytoma). Should I be worried about my son?

I did not think that your post was horrid at all. I think that you have a wealth of knowledge in this area from your own experience and I greatly appreciate you sharing this with me. I will continue to plead my case until someone listens, it helps to know there are others out there who understand! :)

SORRY!! :(  Was having a REALLY bad day yesterday and am having it out with yet another endo.  The one I finally thought was "the one".

When I reread my post to you today I couldn't believe the way I had said all of that.  What I should have said was that I cannot believe the way they are writing it off when hyperthyroidism is such a big deal, so many health risks involved.
And of course your children always come first in your life and you want to take the best care of them you possibly can, but the drs aren't listening.

Hang in there.  Several people on here have stated the fact that it takes on average 6 endos before you can get one to listen to you and who knows their stuff when it comes to the thyroid.  And most of the people on here have been to some major endos in the field.

I myself went to one in Tulsa, OK who is suppose to be tops in his field, is on the cutting edge of thyroid research, has had many articles in AMA magazines and some others (I know this b/c he had them all over his office).  But he was soooooooo smart that he refused to listen to me and talked at me like I was an idiot.  His BIG thing was that I could not possibly have had Graves' b/c I had gained a tremendous amount of weight.  yeah.

Please accept my sincere apology for the horrid way I acted.  I truly will be praying for you and asking forgiveness for myself. ;)

Thank you for your well wishes, I have consulted several endo's, the last one's being at Mayo clinic, I had to beg my previous endo to send me because I wasn't getting much from him (I mean other than I must be severely depressed). I am currently searching for another endo, my son's pediatrician does not feel he needs a ped endo, I have found one 110 miles away who is willing to see my son. Thanks again for your input!

Hello, have you consulted an Endo with thyroid experience?  Or even a thyroid specialist?  I think you need to send that same message as above and ask the MO on the Doctors forum(thyroid) for advise.  I would advise finding a Endo to help you.  And a peds endo for your children.  Remember its your health not the doctors.  If your not happy get another opinion.

Good Luck!

Cheers,
Scott

Yeah, you should be worried.  What kind of morons have you gotten into to do this to you and your children?!  You are SEVERELY hyperthyroid!  When you have no TSH that means HYPERTHYROIDISM!!!!  OMGosh let me at them, too!!
I am NOT yelling at you, just FOR you!!

I have absolutely no idea what most of the things you are talking about are, but I do know hyperthyroidism.  I had Graves' Disease.  And even though I don't know what all these things you are talking about are, thyroid affects virtually every organ in your body.

I would yell and scream like a mad woman if that is what it takes to get an endocrinologist who specializes in thyroid or a thyroid specialists to see to you and ALL of your children!!!  Freaking drs make me insane at their ineptness.

This is a good web site to check out for all the symptoms and FAQs.  This is the American Thyroid Association's official website and should be quite helpful for you.

I am soooo sorry that you and your poor children are going through this with no answers from anyone.  All the people on this forum are truly wonderful and a font of information.  If you have any more questions, need to vent, or an e-hug, come here.  They are amazing people.  And most of us have been at the point of not getting anyone to listen to us.  Some of them for as long as 20 yrs.  Hang in there, we're here for you.

Oh, by the way, when they tell you that you *cannot* gain weight and be hyper, tell them, *oh, yes, you can, look at me!*  Lots of us do it, they just don't want to believe it because it is not as common.  So don't let them blow you off with this.
