Unlike Synthroid (or other T4 meds), cytomel/liothyronine (generic T3) can be taken with or without food.
I was started on 10 mcg cytomel and that was too much, but at that time I didn't know to split the dosage... I dropped back to 5 mcg and no - I didn't feel any difference when I first started taking it. In fact, I didn't know that it was really doing anything for me, until I didn't take it for a few days and quickly began to feel like cr@p...
I was on added T3 med for several months before my FT3 level actually started coming up. My level is still not very high in the range (47% of the range), but the only symptom I have left is the weight issue and sometimes a bit of tiredness, but I also have Pernicious Anemia, so that depends on when I do my B-12 shots, as well. In addition, I also have insulin resistance, so that compounds the weight issue.
You'll have some say they feel a difference "immediately", which indicates a psychological reaction, since it does take time for the pill to dissolve and enter the blood stream...
I'd say a month or so would be a good guideline, because, first, your body has to get used to having it, then your levels have to rise and it's not until your FT3 levels start rising that you'll feel a difference.
Did I read another thread that you'd been started on 25 mcg T3? If so, that will be different, because it's a large dose and you might want to get your doctor rethink that.
THANK YOU BARB... I have seen where people say to take it a hour later from synthroid and with food yet the pharmacist said take it without food, yet the pamphlet from the pharmacy said take it with or without food. I always take my synthroid upon waking early without food for 30 min. and wait till lunch for vitamins and calcium etc. I am also on the generic cytomel hence the pharmacy changed that so I hope it is the same.
DId you feel any changed when you first added generic cytomel, just want to be prepared . Some say it takes a month for you to feel a difference, I am hoping adding it will make my muscles aches go away since I have low normal t3.
This thread is 5 yrs old and shellsfaith hasn't been on the forum since posting this question.
As for taking Synthroid and cytomel together, I can't see that it would hurt anything. I take Tirosint and generic T3 at the same time every day, then have my coffee about 20 minutes later. I've been doing this for a while now and have seen no ill effects. I do take all my other meds separately.
I also take a second dose of T3 around lunch time.
did you ever get a answer to this, I have the same question and how are you feeling with the combo..
