I can relate to the feeling you describe.  I also needed to yawn to get a good breath and I had a tightness in my neck, sometimes feeling like I had food in my throat.  I had many growths on my thyroid although never had abnormal blood work.

Hello - this area you entered is the community forum. The doctor rarely posts here- but this community can can you too.

You asked what direction you need to go in. To eliminate a thyroid problem is very simple. Call to schedule a visit with your doctor and aske to have a TSH Free t4 and a Free T3 test done. Also with the swelling or (enlargement) issues a suggestion to do an ultra sound of the thyroid and neck would be most appropriate.

Hope all checks out fine for you -

not sure but you could have a enlarged thyroid i had very similar feeling with i couldnt look down without it closing off my windpipe dr told me my thyroid was dislodged or displaced and has slipped down. one way to check if you thyroid has slipped is to stand up straight look ahead put your hand above your head and with straight arms clasp hands so that your arms are close together coving your ears if you have trouble breathing your thyroid could be dislodged you will need to see your doctor.(not as bad as it sounds so dont worry) another reason for this believe it or not is stress the more you worry about it the worse it will feel being very stressed can cause the windpipe to feel resticted so very similar feelings but to be on the safe side make sure your dr checks your thyroid
