Just wanted to mention that in my opinion the best way to treat a thyroid patient is to test and adjust levels of the actual, biologically active thyroid hormones, free T3 and free T4, with whatever type of med is required to relieve symptoms, without being constrained by TSH levels. Symptom relief should be all important, not TSH level. If your doctor has a problem with treating your symptoms, then you will need to find a good thyroid doctor that will do so.
Many of our members have reported that symptom relief for them necessitated that FT3 was adjusted into the upper part of its range and FT4 adjusted to at least midpoint of its range. Getting you FT3 and FT4 levels to a level that relieves symptoms will increase your metabolism and thus allow a good diet and exercise plan to get your weight to your target.
thanks, i shall go for the FT3. Levels mentioned in the post are FT4.
Is that T4 result for free T4 or total T4. Also, what is its reference range shown on the lab report? Have you ever had the most important thyroid test, for free T3 (FT3)?
Free T3 is four times as active as FT4, plus FT3 correlates best with hypo symptoms, including low metabolism. If you haven't been tested for free T3, that should be done.
Be aware that many doctors believe that they don't need to test for free T3 because if they know the level of free T4, then they can adequately estimate free T3 level. That is frequently not correct because some patients do not convert T4 to T3 adequately. Also, when taking thyroid meds, FT3 levels frequently get out of balance with FT4 levels. In view of all this, why not just test and make sure? If the doctor resists testing for FT3, then you should insist on getting it done.
