They have not done any scans or other test to find out what is going on...and yes the bllod work paper says 3rd generation TSH 171.000
I have been on levothyroxine for years and cytomel for 3 months. Yes the med routine is correct that I posted...I know that seems odd too but that is what is written on bottle and on the sheet from doctor. The blood work sheet I have before me says Free Thyroxine <.23. They also have prescribed me Vitamin D 50,000 units, 1 pill every day for 1 week then 1 pill twice a week and I have been on that for 3 months. As you can see I am totally at a loss and my health continues to decline.
Forgot to ask - I guess the 171 is a TSH? I "assumed" it was, but please clarify that. TSH is a pituitary hormone, not a thyroid level, and not always indicative of what the thyroid is really doing.
In addition, did your doctor order a thyroid ultra sound to check for nodules? Or antibody testing to see if you have Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, which is an autoimmune disease in which the body sees the thyroid as "foreign" and produces antibodies to attack it. The antibodies eventually "kill" the thyroid, so it no longer produces hormones.
Lots of questions to ask.
How long have you been on the levothyroxine and cytomel? It takes 5-6 weeks to get the full effect of the medication, so you may not have been on it long enough yet.
Are you sure you have the medications correct? Typically, it's the other way around; the levo is taken only once/day, first thing in the morning, on an empty stomach, with a full cup of water, then wait an hour before eating/drinking anything else; while cytomel is best split throughout the day (2 or more doses). Please clarify that.
Are you sure that's a T3 level and not T4 at 0.23? The range seems more like what we see for T4 levels. In addition, was that Free or Total? Tests for Total T3 or Total T4 are considered obsolete and of little value; however, they are a place to start.
Has your doctor prescribed Vitamin D for you? Have you been tested for vitamin B12 levels?
