I too have a heterogeneous thyroid and it could be that you have, as estrelinha stated, thyroiditis that is either autoimmune or viral. I have done a little reading that suggests that one autoimmune disorder could bring on others, so, in your instance, I might lend toward the autoimmune. Since you have to wait for the endo, it might be a good idea to see if they can go ahead and run the labs, especially if another doc did the US for you. That way would would not have to wait so long for any answers. TPO ab will be an indicator (but not always) for Hashimoto's - which is autoimmune. Others, such as TSH and the frees of T4 and T3 will give an indication on if your thyroid is still functioning normally. Hope this helps some. ~Kim
I think you have a thyroidit (because you have a heterogeneity, normal thyroid is homogeneous), doctor will ask you some blood tests (TSH, free T3, free T4), TGO, anti-Tg, ESR, etc. to evaluate the cause (autoimune or viral)
