Yesterday while double checking the info to make sure that my answer is right I came across the ultrasound report of this nature:
[I] got the results of my thyroid ultrasound.
Longitudinal and transverse thyroid sonographic evaluation is performed.
The right lobe of the thyroid measures 7.5 cm in length x 2.7 x 2.6 cm. It is moderately enlarged.
There is a hyperechoic nodule seen associated with the right lobe which measures 10.7 x 7.0 x 8.0 mm.
The left lobe of the thyroid is enlarged measuring 7.5 cm in length x 2.1 x 2.6 cm.
THere is a cystic nodule of the lower pole measuring 15 x 7 x 9 mm. The isthmus measure 1.1 cm.
There is underlying the patient's area of complaint on the left side of the neck, a circumscribed 18 x 5 x 7 lenticulate solid hypoechoic nodule consistent with a lymph node.
Impression:
Enlarged lobes of the thyroid noted bilaterally. Right lobe with a hyperechoic solid nodule measuring 10 x 7 x 8 mm. Left lob with a lower pol cystic nodule measuring 15 x 7 x 9 mm. Underlying the patient's area of palpable complaint in the left side of the neck is an 18 x 5 x 7 mm lenticulate solid hypoechoic nodule consistent with a lymph node.
I will meeting with an endocrinologist in December (and a hematologist as well to see what's up with my slightly elevated WBC of 12--no set appt yet). I had a full thyroid panel done today.

While trying to figure out what caused this uncommon hypothyroid goiter, I discovered that the patient was vegetarian and eat the soy until get concerned about he weight gain and was diagnosed in April, 08 with hypo.
I will not say that being vegetarian and eating the soy will make everybody like this, but if the genetic or whatever predisposition to thyroid disorders is present, it is going to happen.
