the surgeon in two weeks will be examining me and going through with me my ultrasound of thyroid and nuclear thyroid scan results. i guess then he will schedule a biopsy. what is the procedure for the biopsy. are you asleep. i had a parathyroidectomy in 1991 which was one parathyroid seed was removed with a sm tumor on it. i have three parathyroid seeds left. they sit behind my thyroid.. now this with the multiple nodules 3 on left 4 on right. they are considered in particular to the larger one on my left thyroid. my pc called me and scared me to death he stated you have a lump. i want you to see a surgeon for a biopsy. i said do i have cancer. he said we don't know yet.............nice way to tell me huh

You are not alone, I've had an enlarged goiter for years so lord knows how long the nodules were there and growing. Finally in 2007, a new doc looked at my neck and immediately sent me for testing and it is then that I found out how big the largest one was(3.7cm), there were many others. and due to the FNA Biopsy, they found that the cells were abnormal (although only 5% chance of cancer) still recommended surgery due to the type of cells (follicular and hurthle neoplasm) and the size of the nodule. I had surgery in dec of 09 (because I was hesitant) to remove my entire thyroid and lord knows I regret it because of what i'm going through now but it was for the better.....Hang in there.

Hi again
It is extremely rare to find cancer but also I found comfort reading that it is far more easily treated if you do have it than other cancers.
The good thing is it is being checked, just hang on in there hun ok x

A nodule was discovered on my left side this time last year, in July I was scheduled to have the lump removed as it was fast growing, (8 cm in 6mths)
Whilst under the knife more nodules were found and so I ended up having 2/3rds of the thyroid removed, and 3 weeks ago found I am now hypo. The nodule was benign thankfully.
At the time when the lump was growing, I could see it, feel it and would wake in the middle of the night coughing. I asked about a FNA test and was told it is painful and is not proof enough of cancer not being present, I couldn't wait to get the lump out as I was frightened it was cancer, so opted for surgery.
Now of course I know it isn't cancer, but I am hypo so I feel pretty pee'd off about it, but I couldn't keep that lump inside of me any longer.
I hope you get something sorted out soon.

More than likely, they will biopsy the largest nodule to determine if there are any abnormal cells. Once that is done, a decision will be made as to whether or not, surgery is recommended.

Have the biopsy, they can't tell until they get a good sample if it is cancer or not. Even after the biopsy they might not be able to tell.  You have several nodules, you will probably eventually have to remove the thyroid.  Get the biopsy, then you can go from there.
