should i proceed

My primary dr sent me to EENT dr because of a lump in back of neck. EENT dr said not to worry about lump; it was lipoma. He set me up for thyroid ultrasound ( i had recently had breast cancer in Jan; followed by 6 weeks radiation to area. I had asked radiologist for thyroid shield but he told me not necessary) (also past history of soft tissue sarcoma in 1987 and ovarian cancer low potential malignancy in 1991)
Ultrasound showed some nodules, larger one of left of 3.5 cm.   EENT dr. then did a FNB of nodule. Specimen material not sufficient but what was there looked benign.
At dr.s office was told would probably do dye test to test further.   when i called to ask results was told i was already scheduled for surgery (left subtotal thyroidectomy) in 6 days.  I asked why? all blood tests were normal. Went in to talk to P,A. said Dr didnt want to mess around with the dye test because of my past cancer history and recent radiation.
I was afraid and unsure so i refused to sign consent forms and when i called office and told nurse i would not go in for surgery the next day. said i did not understand the reason behind the surgery if biopsy was normal. The nurse told me that they want to remove thyroid when larger than 1 cm; and mine is 3.5 cm.
so i set up appt to have the surgery done next week.  I am still afraid.  I don't know how many surgeries the EENT dr. does and do not know how to find out.   I don't know if the hospital i'm going to have surgery done is a safe one for surgeries.
I am kind of wishy washy and afraid to back out of surgery now.    What is the danger of waiting for a second opinion. why the hurry?

Thanks so much for your response. I took your advise and went with my gut and refused to go thru the surgery the morning scheduled. Then called a thyroid clinic and made appt for 2nd opinion. Went last week. They did another biopsy and am waiting for results.  Unless malignant they do not remove unless over 4cm.   Following your advise has given me peace of mind, regardless of what the biopsy report will be. Thanks

If in doubt, seek a second opinion. Go with your gut. If your only symptom is a lump...definitely see another EENT.
