It was more likely that your FNA showed indeterminate cells, rather that they couldn't get enough.
My first FNA showed Indeterminate. In medical terms this is a kind of an alarm which means, Uh-oh...these cells might be this or they might be that......They then err on the side of caution and take it out.I had Follicular Adenoma in the left side which was removed. (Non-cancer but causing problems)
Later I had the right side removed due to Hurthle Cells appearing in the 2 FNA's they did.
Follicular Adenoma's are a precursor to having Hurthles (not always but commonly) and I am glad they took both sides out.
I have Hashimoto's and my thyroid would have dropped dead anyway.
Personally I would get the 2nd opinion and put your facts together..then get the thyroid out!
You should have it out, you are only delaying the inevitable, and like me you may have cancer. My FNA came back as "benign follicular clusters", I had hashis, too. My thyroid would eventually not work, so I chose to have it out - it was causing hoarseness and swallowing difficulties...glad I did. If you leave it in there is a chance that the parathyroids will become too difficult to save (they are in the thyroid) and you need those to regulate calcium. The surgery is a piece of cake (I had a lobectomy then a TT). You are already taking meds, there is no downside to removal, but if it is cancer then you will be glad you have it out.
I would have it removed...i went through a similiar experience last year...i also had 2 FNA biopsies that both came back inconclusive because there was not enough of a sample. The biggest factor that led me to have my thyroid removed was that,if those nodules grow they will have to take them out anyway to biopsy them...They told me that i could monitor them every 6 months via ultrasound and today I am very thankful that I chose to have my thyroid out - Mine was cancerous and they got it all because it was removed...I would definately consider having yours taken out, only other option is to have it monitored every six months..Best of luck to you!!!
