thyroid during pregnancy

Hello, I am pregnant 16weeks. My thyroid tests are done only for TSH and it came as 5.92. (before preg. TSH levels are at a margin ) .Now my OB suggested to take half a tablet of 25mcg thyroxin.
Does the levels keep changing? should I take the medication ? When should I take another test?

Please do suggest me correct dosage..
Thank you .
Regards,
Laxmi

Your TSH is still over the recommended limit of 3.0; your FT4 is very low in its range, as is FT3.  Rule of thumb is to have FT4 at about midrange and FT3 in the upper 1/3 of it's range.  Your levels are considerably below that.  Keep in mind that those are "rules of thumb", which seems to be about the levels that many people feel best.

Whether or not to start the medication is your decision, but do think of your unborn baby.  Adequate thyroid hormones are essential to growth and development of the unborn child.

Thank you Barb for your valuable suggestion.

I got my test taken and the results came out as :

F t3 - 3.0 pg/ml   ( ref range : 1.7 - 4.2 )
Ft4 - 0.96 ng/dl  ( 0.89 - 1.89 )
TSH 4.7 uIU/mL ( 0.3 - 5.5 )

Please suggest me whether I should start with medication or not ?

Thank you and with best regards..

Adequate thyroid hormone is essential for the growth and development of an unborn child.  Your doctor should be testing Free T3 and Free T4, also in order to make sure your hormones are adequate.

TSH varies for many reasons, even within the same day; so therefore, yes, the levels can keep changing.  You should get tested every 4-6 weeks, but do ask your doctor to test the FT3/FT4 levels, as well.

Do you have symptoms of hypothyroidism?
